EAST LANSING — In 2007, Oakland University gained its first NCAA tournament win with a 2-1 victory over Michigan State in the Men’s Soccer College Cup. On Thursday, Michigan State gained its shot at a postseason rematch and delivered a knockout punch.

Domenic Barone scored both goals and the Spartans won the opening round game, 2-0, at DeMartin Stadium in East Lansing.

Michigan State (12-7-1) advances to face Butler Sunday in the second round.

“It was a good game,” said Oakland head coach Eric Pogue. “The guys battled really hard out there. The first half was pretty even, they had their chances we had ours. We had a good game plan going, we wanted to go out there and make it a battle. The goal in the second half deflated us a little and allowed them to play more defensively, which made it difficult for us to maintain that game plan.”

Barone scored the first goal on a penalty kick after being hauled down at the edge of the penalty box in the 49th minute.

In the 63rd minute, the Spartans scored again on a counterattack goal. Brent Rosendall’s steal resulted in a through pass to Barone, who tucked in his 10th goal of the season.

Oakland (7-11-2) outshot MSU by an 11-10 margin but could not find the back of the net. The Golden Grizzlies pressed during the final 20 minutes but could not gain the equalizer.

MSU’s Rubin Bega almost added another insurance tally when his shot hit the post in the 80th minute.

Avery Steinlage made four saves for the Spartans’ ninth shutout of the season. The win snapped a six-game winless streak for MSU.

Mitch Hildebrandt recorded a pair of breakaway stops for Oakland.
