BOWLING GREEN. OHIO – Freshman Malika Glover scored a team-high 14 points in her collegiate debut and Brittany Carnago had seven blocks, but 12 3-pointers allowed Bowling Green (3-1) to defeat the Oakland women’s basketball team (1-3) by an 80-46 margin on Saturday at Anderson Arena. The Golden Grizzlies struggled offensively, hitting just 28.1 percent from the field.

“They are a senior laden team and run their offense extremely well,” said Oakland head coach Beckie Francis. “If you guard one player they will find someone else for an open shot. I give Bowling Green a lot of credit.”

After falling behind, a pair of blocks by Carnago allowed Oakland to pull within seven points on a layup by Glover at the 9:38 mark of the first half. That was as close as Oakland got, as Bowling Green responded with a 17-5 run that was capped by a 3-pointer from Tracy Pontius. BGSU hit 10 3-pointers in the first half, led by Pontius who sank five triples and scored all of her 17 points in the first half.

Oakland was also hurt when Bethany Watterworth left the game at the 9:02 mark of the first half after picking up her third foul as OU finished the half trailing 45-20. Battling foul trouble all game, Watterworth played just 16 minutes and was held scoreless for the first time in her collegiate career.

Aided by four of Carnago’s seven blocks in the second half and held BGSU to just 32.3 percent shooting in the second half. Canago now has 123 career blocks and is just three away from moving into 14th all-time in The Summit League. Brittney Nelson came off the bench to score eight of her 11 points in the second half, as she knocked down three 3-pointers. Nelson and Glover were the only two players on the OU team to finish in double-digits as the OU bench equaled the starters in scoring output.

BGSU had four palyers in double-figures led by Pontius, as Maggie Hennegan scored 13, while Chrissy Steffen and Lauren Prochaska each scored 11. Prochaska, the two-time Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, also dished out six assists and pulled in five rebounds.
