Oakland sets school record in 105-53 rout of Southern

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Senior Keith Benson had a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while fellow senior Will Hudson scored 19 points and added a career-high 14 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards for his first-ever double-double, to lead Oakland University (2-3) to a Division I school record 52-point win, 105-53, over Southern University (1-6) on Friday at the Chicago Invitational Challenge inside the Sears Centre.

Every player that played for the Golden Grizzlies scored. Junior Reggie Hamilton posted 18 points and dished out a team-high seven assists, while freshman Travis Bader went 5-for-9 from long range to finish with a season-high 17 points.

Sophomore Drew Valentine reached double figures for the first time in his career with 11 points and grabbed a career-best eight rebounds. Junior Ilija Milutinovic tallied eight points and two rebounds, while freshman Ryan Bass had his best game in an OU uniform with six points, four rebounds and three assists to no turnovers.

The Golden Grizzlies led the entire 40 minutes and controlled the glass, outrebounding the smaller Jaguars 55-25. Oakland’s 27 offensive rebounds ranks fourth all-time in program history. The Grizzlies also converted on a season-high 10 3-pointers and shot 46 percent (35-76) in the game.

OU’s defense was also solid, holding Southern to just 33 percent (18-55) from the floor and allowed just nine offensive rebounds in the game.
