Call her Miss … Golf: Stoney Creek’s Compton school’s first state Player of the Year

ROCHESTER HILLS — Devon Compton has had a lot of firsts in her golf career. There’s one that will live in infamy at Rochester Stoney Creek.

Compton was honored Sunday as the 2010 recipient of Miss Golf by the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association, becoming the first Stoney Creek athlete in school history to be named the state’s Player of the Year in her respective sport.

“It’s really an honor being named Miss Golf,” offered Compton, who is also a scholar athlete with a 3.8 GPA. “You don’t know who is going to win it. As a member of the Super Eight., I got a chance to go to the all-state banquet. But you don’t know until they announce it. They presented the Mr. Golf award (to Petoskey’s Joey Grarber, now at Michigan) and then they announced Miss Golf. Only a committee of coaches know beforehand (who wins). It’s an honor.”

Compton is also a three-time member of the All-State Super Team, a collection of the state’s premier eight players, as voted on by a committee of coaches of the MIGCA. She was honorable mention all-state as a freshman.

Compton is joined by junior teammate and 2011 Miss Golf candidate Gabby Yurik on the All-State Super Team. Also making the cut were Grosse Ile senior Molly Esordi, Traverse City West senior Chelsea Guoynes, Otsego senior Brittany Haight, Holt senior Mariah Massa, Plymouth sophomore Kelsey Murphy and Rochester senior Rosalie Shyu.

“What a way to finish her career at Stoney Creek,” said coach Todd Vince. “She was medalist at the state finals and now she’s Miss Golf. She’s in elite company with that award.”

The Miss Golf award, which features a traveling trophy plus a large personal plaque, the goes to a golfer from the Rochester area for the second straight year. Rochester’s Christine Meier captured the ward in 2009.

It’s the sixth straight season a golfer from the Rochester area made the Super Team.

“There’s a lot of great golf being played in the area,” beamed Compton.

Compton had a phenomenal four-year career at Stoney Creek despite playing through a back injury for half of her senior season. She finished 12^th at the state finals her freshman year as an individual qualifier, which was only a handful of finishes at tournaments during her prep career where she did not finish in the top 10. She claimed top-10 honors at every tournament the past two years.

Compton signed with the University of Michigan during the NCAA signing period in mid-November.

This season Compton finished with a 38.3 average for nine-hole dual matches and 75.4 for 18 holes. She won the Division 1 state title on a playoff hole, scoring a two-day total of 147 (77-73) at Eagle Crest in Ypsilanti. She was also second at the regional, first at the Holiday Inn Express Tournament, first at the Grosse Ile tournament, third at the Oakland County Division I tournament and placed second and fourth, respectively, at the two OAA Red Division tournaments.

“It was kind of bittersweet being the state champion, because we just missed the state title (by three strokes),” offered Compton, whose team was ranked No. 1 in the state most of the year. “We still had the best seasons in school history for golf and one of the best seasons (combining all sports).

“This is a great way to finish (my high school career),” added Compton.
