FRIDAY’S ROUNDUP: Brandon trips Oxford; Athens overcomes Yurik’s 42 in 53-52 win over Stoney Creek
OXFORD — Ortonville Brandon opened up the 2010-11 girls basketball season with a 35-29 triumph over Oxford.
Jaelyn Brady led Brandon with nine points. Michelle Gilmore scored nine for Oxford (0-1), which hosts defending Class D state champion Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes next Tuesday.
“We got off to a very poor start but I am proud of how our girls came back to make a game of it in the second half,” said Oxford coach Al Poynter. “We have to use this as a positive learning experience for our young team and bounce back in a big way next week.”
TROY ATHENS 53, ROCHSTER STONEY CREEK 52: Athens withstood a furious 25-14 fourth quarter rally and a career-high 42 points from Gabby Yurik in this OAA Red Division contest in Troy.
Sinclair Russell scored 27 points for Athens, while Jenna O’Dell added 11 for Athens (1-1, 1-0), which used a 18-6 third quarter run to go up 41-27 entering the fourth.
Stoney Creek outscored Athens 25-12 in the fourth
Yurik drained seven 3-pointers and was 8-of-10 from the foul line for Stoney Creek. Emily Wood added six points for Stoney Creek (0-2, 0-2).
ROCHESTER HILLS CHRISTIAN 64, MIDLAND CALVARY BAPTIST 42: The host Eagles opened up the season Friday with this 22-point win over last season’s MACS state runner-up. Allise DuBay had 14 points and eight assists, Megan Steiner added 14 points and 11 rebounds and Devon Tucker supplied six points and 10 rebounds for RHC. Ashli Wallenbeck scored 30 for Midland Calvary (0-1).
BOYS BASKETBALL
ROCHESTER HILLS CHRISTIAN 70, VASSAR JUNIATA CHRISTIAN 25: The Eagles won their second game in the Springfield Christian Eagles Cup in Clarkston Friday to advance to Saturday’s fifth-place game. The Eagles led 31-7 after the first quarter and 31-17 at the break. Rochester Hills outscored Juniata 18-4 in the third quarter and 21-4 in the final frame. Josh West had 20 points and five steals, Nathon Simon added 17 points, six steals and D.J. Szydlowski chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds for RHC.
PONTIAC ACADEMY OF EXCELLANCE 46, TROY BETHANY CHRISTIAN 40: Leon Young recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds to pace PAOE to the season-opening home win Friday over the Bruins. Shawntez Malone led all scorers with 15 points. Travis Woodham had 15 points for Troy Bethany (0-2).
