NOTABLES: Five of the top seven players are back for Avondale, which shared the OAA-White crown with Troy Athens and Rochester Stoney Creek last season; this team is quick and athletic and can cause matchup problems with many teams; Strauss is one of the area’s premier three-point threats and can break a game open with her shooting, while Little is one of the state’s better juniors; watch for this team to get out and run and try to wear teams down.

NOTABLES: With most of its team graduating or transferring out, the Lancers will not field a varsity team this season for the first time since the mid1970s when the program began at Oakland Christian; the school will play mostly junior varsity programs and a few very small school varsity teams with a roster of freshmen and sophomores; the school hopes to re-add varsity girls basketball next winter.

CLARKSTON

NOTABLES: This team suffered through a major rebuilding campaign last winter but has nowhere to go but up; there is better depth on this squad but if the Wolves are to return to the top half of the OAA Red Division, they must simply shoot the ball better. There were several games last season where Clarkston finished with under 30 points; watch for the four returning starters to carry more of a leadership and scoring load this season.

CLARKSTON EVEREST

COLLEGIATE ACADEMY

NOTABLES: The past two years, the players at Everest were part of a unified program with Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes. This season, the school’s third with a functioning high school, will compete with its own varsity team; there are two juniors, three sophomores and six freshmen on the squad, as there are no seniors in the building.

CLARKSTON SPRINGFIELD

CHRISTIAN

COACH: James Day, third season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 4-11, 1-7 FBAC Red Division (fifth).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in MACS Division I sectionals to Saginaw Community Baptist (48-15).

RETURNING STARTERS: Taylor Key, 5-4 jr. PG; Carissa Royer, 6-0 soph. C; Megan Kastner, 6-0 soph. F/G; Rachel Matthews, 5-6 sr. F.

NOTABLES: This program is making the slow climb back to its hay-day of being a powerhouse in the MACS and FBAC, losing just one layer but having good size for a sub-50-student school and plenty of athleticism; the Eagles have three players between 5-9 and 6-0, and Key is a promising point guard who has handles and good court vision; the only negative is that most of the team is sophomores, freshmen and eighth graders; there will be a junior varsity team this year, too, for the first time in several years, as interest is rekindling.

LAKE ORION

COACH: Steve Roberts, 12^th season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 15-9, 7-7 OAA Red Division.

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A regional semifinals to Birmingham Marian.

NOTABLES: Lake Orion has won districts in three of the past four season and two straight, but will need to reload if the Dragons are to enjoy that type of success as they have suffered back-to-back large graduating classes of players; most of this team came off the bench or are players promoted from the junior varsity, as only two of the top 10 players returned this winter; the Dragons will likely finish in the bottom half of the OAA-Red, where Southfield Lathrup is the league favorite; Roberts is now second on the OAA coaching pecking order, behind Adams’ Fran Scislowicz but just ahead of Lathrup’s Michelle Jackson.

LAKE ORION BAPTIST

COACH: Janet Noruk, ninth season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 6-11, 2-6 FBAC Red Division (fourth place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost Ion MACS Division I sections to Rochester Hills Christian (49-16).

NOTABLES: The Lions could be a better team this season with the return of three key players, plus one of the league top prospects in Watterworth, whose older sister is a starter at Oakland University; with a true post player in the lineup, the Lions can now go inside and have a four-year PG in Moreno who can find the open players; look for LOBS to make the FBAC-Red a little deeper this season.

OXFORD

NOTABLES: It’s a new era of Wildcats basketball, as Oxford will move into the OAA White Division after competing in the FML since 1983; the Wildcats have one of the best  post players in all of Oakland County is Parrish and several athletic but unproven players who came off the bench or have been promoted to the varsity ranks this season; with several players serving as combo players, there is plenty of versatility in this year’s group; the Wildcats may be the youngest team in the division with five sophomores and only two seniors on this year’s roster.

ROCHESTER

COACH: Adam Shelton, second season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 11-9, 10-4 OAA Red Division (third).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A district semifinals to Lake Orion.

RETURNING STARTERS: Kristin Garr, 5-6 sr. PG; Katie Steffens, 6-0 sr. F/C.

OTHER RETURNING LETTERWINNERS: Cady Pozolo, 5-8 sr. G/F; Zhana Randolph, 5-8 soph. G.

NOTABLES: The Falcons graduated 75 percent of its scoring, losing a large crop of players to graduation, plus another who opted not to play this season; Rochester has a solid  post presence in Steffens and the return of Pozolo, a state champion relay runner in track who missed last season with a hand injury, gives this team some quality seniors. But who will score? The Falcons must develop some go-to players on the offensive end in order to compete.

ROCHESTER ADAMS

COACH: Fran Scislowicz, 20^th season (254-174).

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 12-6, 8-6 OAA White Division (fourth).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A districts to Rochester Stoney Creek.

NOTABLES: Despite not having a senior on its roster last season and graduating all five starters from two years ago, Adams still posted a winning record last winter and should join Auburn Hills Avondale and West Bloomfield in the race for the OAA White Division crown this winter; the only Achilles’ heal of this squad, much like a lot of others in the OAA, is shooting; the Highlanders must shoot at a higher percentage form the floor if they are going to contend.

ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK

COACH: Brad Crighton, ninth season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 17-6, 11-3 OAA White Division (tied, first).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A district finals to Lake Orion (54-48).

RETURNING STARTERS: Gabby Yurik, 5-7 jr. PG (16 ppg, 5 rpg, 5apg); Kara Kovack, 5-5 sr. SG (10 ppg, 3apg, 3rpg; 56 three-pointers); Lauren Bolhuis, 5-6 jr. G

NOTABLES: The Cougars step up to the OAA Red Division after sharing the OAA-White with Troy Athens and Auburn Hills Avondale last season; Stoney Creek won its first two district games last season and only came a couple of points shy of a district championship; if this team continues to exist as the top shooting team in the OAA and develops some post play, this squad could finish in the upper tier of the OAA-Red and make a run at a district trophy.

NOTABLES: The Colts have a new coach and mostly new players, as 12 of 15 players on the roster were not regulars on the varsity last season; Troy does have lightning-quick guard Moss and Seipker, who is in her third season after transferring from Birmingham Marian; if Seipker can stay inside and use her size to her advantage, she could become one of the better post players in the league as she has a nice touch; the jury is still out on how the colts will fare this season overall, as with a dozen new players, it will take time for this group to gel as a unit.

With four starters and two key reserves back, the transition should be somewhat smooth; Athens has experience and depth, but it must learn to shoot better from the floor to stay in the upper echelon of the league.
