PREP ROUNDUP: Avondale takes control of OAA-White by holding off West Bloomfield
AUBURN HILLS — Auburn Hills Avondale and West Bloomfield were tagged as the favorites in the OAA White Division girls basketball in the preseason.
Avondale gained an inside track in the first meeting between the two posting a 66-58 triumph over the Lakers Thursday. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday but postponed due to weather.
Junior forward Hannah Little scored 21 points to pace Avondale (3-1, 3-0). Andrea Strauss and Courtney Williams added 10 points each for the Yellowjackets, who outscored West Bloomfield in each of the first three quarters.
Avondale led 19-13 after the first quarter, 34-25 at the half and 56-41 through three quarters of play. West Bloomfield closed with a 17-10 run to cut the final deficit to single digits.
Sophomore guard Sydni Davis pumped in a game-high 26 points for West Bloomfield (2-1, 1-1). Senior center Taylor Gunn added 15 points and Jailynn Jackson-Hamilton, who transferred from Avondale to West Bloomfield over the summer, finished with only four points.
WATERFORD OUR LADY OF THE LAKES 69, ADRIAN LENAWEE CHRISTIAN 49: Lauren Robak continued her early-season outburst, scoring 29 points as the Lakers took down Lenawee in a battle of Class D powerhouse teams. Ava Doetsch added 23 points for WOLL (3-0). Lexie Robak also reached double figures and helped her team combine for nine three-pointers.
CLARKSTON EVEREST COLLEGEIATE 45, DETROIT URBAN LUTHERAN LUTHERAN 4: The Mountaineers were downright defensive in this CHSL rout Wednesday. Kersten Engle scored 11 and Juliana Mastromatteo added 10 points for Everest (1-1).
ROCHESTER ADAMS 44, OXFORD 24: Adams turned a 13-11 halftime lead into a 20-point OAA White Division win. Emily Bryce scored 10 and Jocelyn McDougal added nine points for Adams (2-1, 1-0). Sam Myers scored nine, Michelle Gilmore added eight points and Miranda Murphy had seven rebounds for Oxford.
“We played our best half of the season in the first half but then Adams came at us with force in the second half and broke things open,” said Oxford coach Al Poynter. We hung tough but just couldn’t get the key basket or free throw when we needed it. This is definitely a game that our young team can build on.”
PONTIAC 46, ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK 44: Breanna House scored 17 and Brittany Alston added 10 points in leading the Phoenix to an OAA Red Division win Thursday over the visiting Cougars. Gabby Yurik scored 18 and Kara Kovack added 14 points for Stoney Creek (3-2, 2-2).
BOYS BASKETBALL
CLARKSTON EVEREST COLLEGIATE 52, DETROIT URBAN LUTHERAN 42: Donald Allen picked up the double-double Thursday in this CHSL win. Everest used a 19-8 run in the second quarter to build a 25-17 lead and break the game open. The Mountaineers (2-1, 1-1) outscored Urban 27-25 in the second half. Blake Beauchamp added six points for Everest.
