AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE

COACH: Karl Daiek, first season.

2009-2010 RECORD: 7-17-3, 1-9-2 sixth in OAA White Division.

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 2 regional finals to Flint Kearsley (3-2, overtime).

KEY RETURNEES: Jon Fritts, Derek Piercy, Andy Stein, Blake Blomberg, Steven Carter, Sal Munaco, Kris Stein, Shane Swinburnson.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Brian Portelli, sr. F; Andrew Ozerities, sr. F; Craig Zimmerman, soph. F; Emmett Wagner, fr. F.

KEY LOSSES: Michael Przytakoski, F; Zach Wagner, F; Matt Pacioni,  D.

NOTABLES: The Yellowjackets turned a rebuilding year from finishing near the bottom of the OAA White Division to winning a pair of games in the Division 2 postseason and advancing to the regional finals before falling to Flint Kearsley; Avondale does have a new coach but return 17 players which should help this team be much more competitive this season; Avondale is currently 2-6-0 overall and 1-4 in the league.

CLARKSTON

COACH: Bryan Krygier, 10th season.

2009-2010 RECORD: 9-14-2, 4-7-2 OAA Red Division (tied-fourth).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 regional semifinals to Lake Orion (2-1).

KEY RETURNEES: Austin Morse, sr. F; Troy Fasseel, sr. G; Adam Bruderick, jr.  D; Brad Pizzey, jr. F; Chad Wotton, sr. D; Dillon Drayer, F; Connor Hughes, sr. F; Adam Johns, soph. D; Adam Matynowski, sr. D.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Macario Torres, sr. F; Adam Larkin, soph. D.

KEY LOSSES: Adam Frank, F (all-time leading scorer); Nick Heinrich, D; Jack Schlau, F; Austin Morse, F; Sean Hancook, D.

NOTABLES: The Wolves played an extremely tough schedule last season and finished around the five-hundred mark; Clarkston graduated a solid class, including the program’s all-time leading scorer in Adam Frank; the Wolves were 5-4-1 entering the Christmas break, including 3-0-1 in the conference.

LAKE ORION

COACH: Pat Cherry, fifth season; Kurt Robar, second season (co-head coaches).

2009-2010 RECORD: 12-13-1, 4-7-2 OAA Red Division (tied-fourth).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 regional finals to Utica Eisenhower (2-1, overtime).

KEY RETURNEES: Zac Koonce, F; Shawn Horton, jr. G; Danny Blaczyk, jr. F; Corbin Rainey, jr. F; Nick Balavich, jr. F; Shane Stockwell, jr. F; Jessie Cameron, sr. F; Dominic Juncaj. Sr. G; Brett Reed, sr. F; Daniel Chapie, sr. F.

KEY LOSSES: None.

NOTABLES: Cherry and Robar are serving as co-coaches for a team that was loaded with underclassmen last season and came one shot from the state quarterfinals last season; the Dragons also made the quarterfinals in 2007; this season the Dragons are again 2-1-0in the league but just 2-4-0 overall; with 17 players back, it’s only a matter of time before this unit begins to gel again and find its rhythm.

OXFORD

COACH: Dave Hague, sixth season.

2009-2010 RECORD: 20-6-0, 12-2 Flint Metro League (second).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 2 regional semifinals to Davison (5-0).

NOTABLES: Oxford’s 11th season of high school hockey is a season in transition; not only are the Wildcats in a new conference playing a wide variety of new teams, but the Wildcats are now facing life beyond Hrschuk, the school’s all-time best goaltender; there are 12 returnees and 10 newcomers, forming a nice mix of experience and inexperience; the Wildcats are off to another quality start, going 6-3-0 in the first month and stand alone atop the OAA-White at 4-0-0.

ROCHESTER UNITED

COACH: Dave Underdale, fourth season.

2009-2010 RECORD: 15-10-1. 8-3-1 OAA Red Division (third).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 regional finals to Orchard Lake St. Mary’s.

KEY RETURNEES: Michael Potoniec, sr. F; Matt Zuelch, jr. D; Dan Ryan, sr. D; Ian Mercer, sr. G.

KEY LOSSES: Adam Suleskey, D; George Holt, F; Justin Dennis, F; Ivan Gaydayenko, F; Ryan Cricelli, D.

NOTABLES: After a slow start, Rochester had a fine flurry to end last season, going 9-2-1 down the stretch with the season ending in an overtime loss to state powerhouse in the Sweet 16 to Orchard Lake St. Mary’s; two years ago, United reached the state quarterfinals; United must replace a very talented class to gradaution, and the rebuilding has left them 2-3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play as of Christmas

ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK

COACH: John Gruden, fourth season.

2009-2010 RECORD: 7-15-4, 1-8-3 OAA Red Division (seventh).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Won regional title; Lost in D-2 state quarterfinals to Midland (4-1).

KEY RETURNEES: Adam Ketner, sr. D;Joe Costello, jr. F.

KEY LOSSES: Jeff Bourgoin, F; Mike Orosey, F; Ben Mommersteeg, D.

NOTABLES: After finishing seventh in the OAA-Red last season with only four regular-season wins, the Cougars became the darling of the D-2 state tournament, winning three games and the school’s first-ever regional championship; this season is already off to a quality start, as Stoney Creek is 4-2-0 overall and 2-2-0 in a balanced OAA-Red.

TROY

COACH: Tim Zimmerman, fifth season.

2009-2010 RECORD: 12-10-4, 4-4-4 OAA White Division (tied-fourth).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost to Rochester United in Division 1 regional semifinals (5-3).

COACH: Joe Barone, fourth season.

2009-2010 RECORD: 17-5-4, 11-0-1 OAA White Division (first).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 regional semifinals to Sterling Heights Stevenson (3-2).

KEY RETURNEES: Jamie Cattran, sr. G; Tyler Everlove, sr. F; Justin Yochem, sr. G; Dan Kreza, sr. D.

KEY LOSSES: Matt Lining, F; Mike MacKinnon, F; Steve Perkins, F; Cameron Bazin, sr. F.

NOTABLES: Athens won back-to-back conference titles, but make the quantum leap up to the OAA Red Division in the penalty box, as the Red Hawks suffered mass losses to graduation and are 0-3-0 in the league heading into the break and 1-6-1 overall; in the state tournament, the Red Hawks lost in the regional finals in overtime in 2008 and were upset in the regional semifinals each of the past two years; a fourth straight season with a winning record is in jeopardy as two-thirds of the roster is new from last season.
