TROY — A year ago, Davison Faith Baptist’s Jon Knapp torched Troy Bethany Christian for 29 points in a non-league boys basketball win. This time in Troy, Travis Woodham took it personal.
The senior guard from Bethany Christian held Knapp to only 12 points and the Bruins’ rallied for a 48-45 victory.
“I thought that Travis was the difference,” said Bethany Christian coach Jack Walker. “The last time we played them up at their place, Jon Knapp had 29 points. It seemed like it might have been 39. Travis’ defense on him was superb. He really shadowed him, shut him down.”
Troy Bethany (6-2) closed with a 10-2 run to ground the Eagles (5-2).
“We were down five, and then we went on that 10-2 run. The boys executed in the final few minutes to win the game,” said Walker. “It seems that this is usually a close game. We found a way to win this time.
“This win will absolutely help when it comes to seeding for the MACS tournament,” added Walker. “They are always one of the best teams in the MACs every year.”
The two teams were tied 22-22 at the break, but Davison Faith outscored Bethany Christian 14-10 in the third quarter to take a 36-32 advantage in to the final frame.
The Eagles extended the lead to 43-38 before the Bruins went on their late-game run to steal the victory. Senior guard Jono Gronow scored six of his 12 points in the fourth-quarter run.
Junior Daniel Sprankle connected on four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 20 points to pace Troy Bethany.
“Daniel had one of his better games. He is normally one of our best shooters and he had a nice game against a good team,” said Walker.
Josh Vanaman led Davison Faith Baptist with 19 points.
