INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP — A year ago, Clarkston posted a 9-0 record only to finish third at the divisional meet at Pine Knob. This season, the Wolves made sure there would be a clean sweep.

Clarkston’s boys won their first Pine Knob Divisional meet title and overall division crown in several years Wednesday and Thursday, collecting 51 points to topple the 10-team field.

The top three teams and the top 10 individuals in both the slalom and giant slalom advance to the SEMSL championships Feb. 22 at Pine Knob. The meet will feature the best from the Pine Knob, Mt. Holly, Alpine Valley and Mt. Brighton divisions.

Clarkston’s Grant Huber won both the slalom and giant slalom, and the Wolves landed five in the top 10 in the slalom and three in the top 10 in the giant slalom to win going away.

“We’ve swept it so far this year,” said Clarkston coach Mike Foyteck, who returned to the helm after a one-season hiatus. “It’s not so much a veteran team, it’s actually a young team. But they’ve had a lot of experience racing (on the club circuit) coming into Clarkston, and they continue to train for Clarkston.”

Meanwhile, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep and Lake Orion both recorded 84 points, with Prep earning the meet title on a fifth-skier tie-breaker. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood (91) also made the cut.

“This is our first (overall) divisional title since I’ve been here,” said Lake Orion coach Derek Delzer. “We’ve had a good season so far this season. We tied Notre Dame earlier this season and got them (on the tie-breaker). We did win (the overall) crown, so that’s nice accomplishment. We have a good group of four seniors who have put in a lot of work.

Notre Dame Prep is the smallest team in the Pine Knob Divisional, and the Fightin’ Irish, who began their program just over a decade ago, have made quite a run in recent years. They were divisional champs last season and have been a regular contender in the division for several years.

“We’ve had a nice run,” said NDP coach Kim Stencel. “We’re Division 2 (for the state tournament), so this is nice for us (to win the divisional). Next week we won’t see a lot of these teams. We’ve won six regionals in a row and we’re hoping to get our seventh.”

Cranbrook finished in the runner-up slot in the boys meet with 65.5 points, followed by Lake Orion (130.5).

Bloomfield Hills Andover was fourth in the boys meet with 133.5 points, followed by Rochester Adams (148), Notre Dame Prep, (181.5), Birmingham Detroit Country Day (189), Bloomfield Hills Lahser (291), Rochester (291) and Waterford United (no team score).

Andover just missed a qualifying berth in the girls meet, finishing fourth with 104 points. Lahser (165), Clarkston (229), Adams (232), Country Day (293), Rochester (306) and Waterford (no team score) followed suit.

Lake Orion’s Marie Dohm won the GS and Andover’s Ashleigh Stewart, second in the GS, won the slalom.

Lake Orion’s girls had three top-10 finishers in the GS and one in the slalom. Notre Dame Prep had three of the top 10 in the slalom and a pair of top-10 showings in the GS.
