TOLEDO, Ohio – Junior Aaron Cieslak drove in a pair of runs to give Oakland University (4-11) a lead, but  it didn’t last in a 5-3 loss to  Toledo (8-15) on Wednesday at Scott Park. The Golden Grizzlies outhit the Rockets 14-9 but committed a pair of costly errors and left five runner stranded on base.

“A failure to execute in key situations cost us today,” said Oakland head coach John Musachio. “We pitched well, we swung the bats well, but we just didn’t make a couple of plays and that was the difference.”

Oakland took a 3-2 lead in the sixth when Cieslak singled to drive in senior D.J. Jarrad and junior Tim Ryan. The Golden Grizzlies threatened to make it a big inning, loading the bases with one out, but failed to add to their lead.

The Rockets responded by loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Jake Arendsen came in and, after striking out the first batter he faced, got what looked like an inning-ending ground ball double play. However, the throw to first was off the mark and two runs came in to score, giving the Rockets a 4-3 edge.

Ryan was a perfect 4-for-4 to lead Oakland, while Wick and sophomore Mike Carson each went 3-for-4 as the Golden Grizzlies produced hits, but failed to bring runners home. Ben Hammer and Mark Lapikas both went 2-for-3 to lead Toledo. Tyler Grogg added a RBI-double for the Rockets in the seventh.

Toledo took advantage of a first-inning error by OU to grab a 2-0 lead on a pair of unearned runs. The Golden Grizzlies got  a run back in the second, when sophomore Kyle Bobolts hit an infield single that scored senior Aaron Wick.

Mark Leichtman (0-1) suffered the loss despite allowing just one earned run over five innings of work. He struck out two batters.  Alex Radon (3-2) earned the win for Toledo throwing 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and getting out of the bases loaded jam in the sixth inning.

Oakland is scheduled to play Rochester College on Friday. The game location will be determined based on field conditions at the OU Baseball Field.
