2011 BOYS GOLF TEAM CAPSULES

Below are the boys golf team capsules for schools in the www.northoaklandsports.com coverage area. Coaches can forward pertinent information about their team to results@northoaklandsports.com or to Senior Editor Dan Stickradt at dan.stickradt@northoaklandsports.com.

ON THE RISE: Rochester senior Paul Woo and the Falcons hope to soar this spring with its most talented team in at least a decade. Staff File Photo

SCHOOL: Auburn Hills Avondale

COACH: James Maley

DISTRICT: Third at Division 2 Lyon Oaks district (340).

REGIONAL: Eight at regional.

COUNTY: Sixth at D-II county (329).

STATE: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Steven Turner, sr.(fourth-year player); Ryan Williams, sr.; Kevin Pennycook, sr.; Keith Pennycook, sr.; Steve Carter, jr.(state qualifier); Blake Blomberg, jr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Spencer Jacobson, jr.; Troy May, jr.; Justin Przytakoski, jr.; Jack O’Neil, jr.; Michael Monohan, jr.

KEY LOSSES: Mike Prztakoski.

NOTABLES: Avondale is another team on the rise with a veteran squad of all seniors and juniors, plus a state qualifier in the mi, the Yellowjackets hope they can build upon last year’s regional appearance; this could be one of the school’s best seasons and this team should contend in the OAA White Division at the least.

SCHOOL: Auburn Hills Oakland Christian

COACH: Randy Johnson, 12th season.

LEAGUE: MIAC league champion.

DISTRICT: Won Division 4 Heather Highlands district (320).

REGIONAL: Second at Division 4 Bald Mountain regional (330).

COUNTY: 10th at D-I county (322).

STATE: 10th at Division 4 state finals (359-348—707).

KEY RETURNEES: Tyler Coyne, sr. (ninth at state; first-team all-state); Nick VanBiesbrouck, sr. (honorable-mention all-state;85-78—163); Paul Klemme, jr.; Brandon Delekta, jr.; Cullen Burgess, sr. Ryan Hatfield, sr.;

KEY NEWCOMERS: Zach Preuss, jr.(first-team all-state; Division 4 state champion;77-71—148; transfer from Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest); Jon VanNord, fr.; Patrick Vanbiesbrouck, fr.; Spencer Haupert, fr.

KEY LOSSES: Brenden Gres (exchange student from France; would be a senior).

NOTABLES: Last season the Lancers had four players transfer away before the season, but they benefited from an exchange student for a bulk of the season before he returned to France in June just days before the state finals; this season with most of the team back, a state champion transfer and a solid freshman class, Oakland Christian should contend in every tournament it plays, including the Oakland County Division I, regional and the state title with an extremely deep and talented team.

SCHOOL: Clarkston

COACH: Pete Gallagher, second season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 3-2, 3-2 OAA Red Division (overall league champs).

LEAGUE: Won both OAA-Red tournaments (325-320).

DISTRICT: Fourth at Division 1 Oxford Hills district (313).

REGIONAL: Fourth at Division 1 Flushing Valley regional (313).

COUNTY: Second at D-I county (310).

STATE: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Jimmy Delnick, jr.; Andrew Lang, jr.; Ryan Milliken, sr.; Chad Wotton, sr.; Nathan Cowan, sr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Jack Ali, soph.; Dan Corazza, jr.; Mac McClleland, jr.

KEY LOSSES: Nick Roberson, Taylor Walker, Charlie Nye.

NOTABLES: Clarkston missed the state finals by one stroke in a extremely tough regional where only 18 strokes separated the top 10 schools; five of the top eight return, but the Wolves may not be the favorites in the league this season and with the same teams in their district and likely in the regional, the path to the state finals is going to leave not room for error.

SCHOOL: Lake Orion

COACH: Monty Gallaher, 10th season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 2-4, 1-4 OAA Red Division (fourth overall).

LEAGUE: Third at both OAA-Red tournaments (331-328).

DISTRICT: Third at Oxford Hills district (313).

REGIONAL: Eighth at Division 1 Flushing Valley regional (322).

COUNTY: 15th at D-I county (326).

STATE: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Corbin Rainey, sr.; Tyler Dragoo, jr.; Eddie Cummings, jr.; Ryan McKeon, jr.; Alex Waelchli, soph.; Mason Gorris, soph.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Daniel Chappie, jr.; Casey Vandergraff, soph.; Griffin Beeler, fr.

KEY LOSSES: Paul Couretas, Jesse Cameron.

NOTABLES: Lake Orion was another team that had a respectable showing last season with a young team and was in a logjam at a deep regional, placing eighth and missing third by only 10 strokes; this year’s team is again young with only one senior with four juniors, three sophomores and one freshman vying for playing time; the Dragons are a team on the rise and should be a contender in the OAA-Red and at various tournaments this season.

SCHOOL: Oxford

COACH: Terry Kelley, eighth season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 7-4, 6-3 Flint Metro League (fifth overall).

LEAGUE: Fifth at FML tournament (319).

DISTRICT: Second at Oxford Hills district (309).

REGIONAL: 12th at Division 1 Flushing Valley regional (337).

COUNTY: 24th at D-I county (341).

STATE: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Doug Piesko, sr. (Lake Superior State); Nick Hocker, jr.; Nolan Chapman, jr.; Josh Hosking, sr.; Justen Crouse, jr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: JJ Hill, fr.; Cody Collier, sr.; Doug Schultz, fr. Dave Pearlman, jr.

KEY LOSSES: Dean Couwlier.

NOTABLES: Oxford finished fifth in a tight Flint Metro League race last spring, but will be competing on some different golf courses this year in the OAA White Division, along with Troy Athens, Auburn Hills Avondale, Bloomfield Hills Andover, Bloomfield Hills Lahser and West Bloomfield; this league is wide open this year, so Oxford will wait and see how they fair over the next couple of months; the Wildcats do return six of their top seven players from last season, plus have a pair of freshman that could break into the lineup; there are 43 hopefuls vying for time in the program, proving that this squad is on the rise and growing in interest.

IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION: Robby Szymanski and his Rochester Stoney Creek teammates hope to improve on their sixth-place shwoing in the OAA Red Division from last year. File Photo.

SCHOOL: Rochester

COACH: Paul Marti, 12th season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 8-1, 5-0 OAA Red Division (second overall).

LEAGUE: Fourth (334) and second (327) at two OAA-Red league meets.

DISTRICT: Sixth at Division 1 Oxford Hills district (315).

REGIONAL: Seventh at Division 1 Flushing Valley regional (321).

COUNTY: Won Oakland County Division II tournament (304).

STATE: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Eric Shyu, jr. (all-league, all-area); Paul Woo, sr. (state qualifier); Dave Collins, sr.; Chris Stewart, sr.; Sean O’Malley, jr.; Mike Santavica, jr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Ludovic Clavette-Lachapelle, fr.; Mike Murri, fr.; Scott Difilippo, fr.

KEY LOSSES: Alex Johnson, (No. 4 golfer).

NOTABLES: Rochester had its best season in nearly a decade last spring, finishing second in the tough OAA-Red and advancing from the district to regional; the Falcons only missed the state finals by nine strokes in a regional where 11 strokes separated third from ninth place; with six of the top eight players back, plus three quality freshman that will challenge for some varsity tournament time, this should be Rochester’s best team since it was a regular state qualifier through much of the 1990s; watch for this team to finish near the top in the league, county, district and regional.

SCHOOL: Rochester Adams

COACH: Dan Picot, fifth season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 5-3, 3-3 OAA Red Division

LEAGUE: Second (326) and fourth (332)

DISTRICT: Fifth at Oxford Hills district (313)

REGIONAL: Fifth at Division 1 Flushing Valley regional (318)

COUNTY: 16th at D-I county (326).

STATE: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Ben Van Orman, jr.; Jamie Stanton, jr.; Marcus Robinson, soph.; Eric Busa, soph.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Drew White, jr.; Eric Hund, soph.; Zach Adams, fr.

KEY LOSSES: Matt Brady (Elon; all-state, state qualifier), Matt Werner.

NOTABLES: city champs missed by six strokes

Adams, the city champs and a regional qualifier last season, may drop slightly from previous years with no seniors in the top eight, but never count the Highlanders out as there are some quality young players climbing the ranks that will help his team compete against some of the top teams in Oakland County; four of the top seven players are back and with one freshman, three juniors and three sophomores in the mix, this will be one of the youngest teams in the area.

SCHOOL: Rochester Stoney Creek

COACH: William Slade, third season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 2-6, 1-4 OAA Red Division (sixth).

LEAGUE: Sixth at both league tournaments (353-349).

DISTRICT: Ninth at Oxford Hills district (3125).

REGIONAL: Did not qualify.

COUNTY: Fifth at D-II county (325).

STATE: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Robby Szymanski, sr. (regional qualifier); Matt Benner, sr.; Ryan Jackson, jr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Al Bickmann, jr.; Richie Ingle, soph.; Michael Doyle, fr.; Michael Linihan, fr.

KEY LOSSES: John Prosser, Shane Felten, Sean Cahill, Matt Peklo, Blake Wiesemann.

NOTABLES: Stoney Creek is still in the building process but is definitely a team built for the future; there is a strong freshman class infused with three returnees and only two seniors in the program, so this team will look to improve this season in a tough conference with an eye on 2012; watch for Doyle to be one of the best freshmen in a bumper crop of ninth-grade prospects in Oakland County this season.

SCHOOL: Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest

COACH: Jimmy Mehlberg, first season.

LEAGUE: Third in MIAC.

DISTRICT: Second at Division 4 Heather Highlands district (344).

REGIONAL: Fourth at Division 4 Bald Mountain regional (337).

COUNTY: Ninth at D-II county (333).

STATE: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Spencer Frania, sr.; Tom Miller, sr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Crusaders have a senior, two juniors and one sophomore that are new on the team.

KEY LOSSES: Zach Preuss (all-state, defending Division 4 state champion; regional runner-up; transferred to Auburn Hills Oakland Christian); Thom Kubeshesky (state qualifier).

NOTABLES: Northwest missed the Division 4 state by two strokes last season, but both of its individual state qualifiers have departed along with two other players; only two of the top six from last year return, so this should be a rebuilding year.

CALM AND COLLECTIVE: Troy's JR Graham and the rest of the Colts like their chances of a successful season in 2011, where Troy returns most of its team that qualified for regional play a year ago. File Photo.

SCHOOL: Troy

COACH: John Getzan

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 6-3, 3-2 OAA Red Division (fifth overall).

LEAGUE: Fifth at both OAA-Red tournaments (346-342).

DISTRICT: Fourth at district.

REGIONAL: Ninth at regional (311).

COUNTY: Eighth at D-I county (321).

STATE: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: JR Graham, sr.; Jeff Holmes, jr.; James Heichel, jr.; Anthony D’Amico, sr.; Evan Hill, sr.; Brett St. Cyr, sr.

KEY LOSSES: Adam Zander.

NOTABLES: Seven of the top eight golfers are back from a team that reached the regional round and the Colts should be able to have even a better season this spring; Troy entered last season in the opposite boat, with only two returnees; if Troy can play with more consistency this season, it should be able to improve into standing at various tournaments.

SCHOOL: Troy Athens

COACH: Dale Rahn.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 4-3, 3-3 OAA White Division (fourth overall).

LEAGUE: Second (305) and fifth at OAA-White league meets.

DISTRICT: Fifth at district (315).

REGIONAL: Eighth at Division 1 regional.

COUNTY: 14th at D-II county (343).

STATE: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Jamie Cattran, sr.; James VanNoord, sr.; Chris Dye, sr.; David Farnum, sr.; Steven Pawlak, sr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Jason Wang, jr.; Jon Woo, jr.; Cameron Maciejewski, jr.

KEY LOSSES: Brian Flewelling.

NOTABLES: The Red Hawks had a case of bad luck last season, losing three dual matches either by one or two strokes and were not far off the pace in league tournaments as well; Athens had two rough days in tournament play, coming at the county and regional tournaments; Rahn feels with five of the top six back, all seniors, that this could be one of the school’s best teams; the Red Hawks also head east for district and regional play and will not be in the state’s toughest regional if they are to advance that far in the postseason; could a state finals berth be in the making?

SCHOOL: Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes-Clarkston Everest Collegiate Unified
