GIRLS SOCCER TEAM CAPSULES

Below are the 2011 girls soccer team capsules, as compiled by NorthOaklandSports staff. All information sent in by coaches. Is your team’s information missing from the season preview? Please forward pertinent information to results@northoaklandsports.com or dan.stickradt@northoaklandsports.com

SCHOOL: Auburn Hills Avondale

HEAD COACH: Dave Muczynski, 17th season.

2010 RECORD: 11-8-3, 4-4-2 OAA Red Division (sixth).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 2 district finals in shootout to eventual state champion Birmingham Marian (1-0).

RETURNING STARTERS: Andrea Strauss, sr. G (first-team all-state); Regina Nofs, sr. D (third-team all-state); Rachel Stangel, sr. D; Lauren Kroninger, jr. D; Jessica Creech, soph. M; Xaidai Ruiz, sr. M.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Alyssa Johns, sr. D (missed most of last season with injury).

KEY NEWCOMERS: Madison Duncan, fr. M; Alyssa Chapman, fr. M; Michelle Krupa, fr. M.

KEY LOSSES: Kayla Mannino, F/M (first-team all-state; four-time all-stater; Michigan).

NOTABLES: The Yellowjackets lost the school’s most dominant player to graduation in Kayla Mannino, who already had a successful campaign last fall at the University of Michigan; what the Yellowjackets do have is a pair of all-staters in the back in three-sport athlete Strauss (goalkeeper) and college recruit Nofs (sweeper); there is a strong freshman class infused with the traditional blue-collar mentality at Avondale, so there’s no expected drop off now that Avondale has spent the past few years as one of the better D-2 teams in the state.

SCHOOL: Auburn Hills Oakland Christian

HEAD COACH: Brent Wood, first season.

2010 RECORD: 10-8-1, 7-5-0 MIAC Blue Division.

FIGHT TO THE FINISH: Troy Athens’ Leah Schmitz and Rochester’s Maria Lepore will try to help their respective teams in the ever-tough OAA Red Division this season. Staff Photo | Dan Stickradt

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 4 district finals to Marine City Cardinal Mooney.

RETURNING STARTERS: Taylor McKenna, sr. S; Faith Lieder, jr. D; Ally Hoskins, jr. D; Rachel TerMarsch, jr. M; Darcy Johnston, jr. M (all-state; leading scorer); Samantha Woloson,jr. F.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Tori Johns, fr. M; Maddie Bottiaux, fr. G; Chyenne Webb, fr. D;

KEY LOSSES: Dana Johnston, M.

NOTABLES: Wood replaces Dick Harding as head coach and inherits a team with only a couple of seniors and a strong incoming freshman class; the Lancers were middle-of-the-pack in the MIAC-Blue last season.

SCHOOL: Clarkston

HEAD COACH: Sarah Wasilk, sixth season.

2010 RECORD: 15-3-1, 9-0-1 OAA White Division (first).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district finals to Rochester Adams (3-1).

RETURNING STARTERS: Andrea Butler, sr. D (all-league, all-district); Jackie Gipe, sr. D (all-league, all-district); Mikayla Ferer, jr. M/F (all-league, all-district, all-area, honorable-mention all-state); Lindsey Adams, jr. M/F; Caitlin Kirby, jr. M; Kaylee Liddle, sr. M/F.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Taylor Stokes, jr. D; Sarah McCallum, jr. F; Claire Viazanko, sr. F; Amanda Ejups, sr. M; Samantha Johnson, sr. D; Gina Bollini, sr. D; Emily Roan, sr. M; Lisa Lyons, jr. F.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Katie Miller, soph. G; Morgan Todd, soph. M; Chelsea Chase, jr. D; Andrea Dumais, jr. F; Jenny Zawadski, sr. D;

KEY LOSSES: Demaree Wells, G; Breanne Timm, D.

NOTABLES: The Wolves have righted the ship the past couple of years and posted their highest win total in school history last season, where they went unbeaten in league play and reached the district finals.

SCHOOL: Clarkston Springfield Christian

HEAD COACH:

2010 RECORD:

STATE TOURNAMENT:

RETURNING STARTERS:

OTHER KEY RETURNEES:

KEY NEWCOMERS:

KEY LOSSES:

NOTABLES: No information submitted.

SCHOOL: Lake Orion

HEAD COACH: Ken Snage, eighth season.

2010 RECORD: 17-4-2, 6-3-2 OAA Red Division (fourth).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district finals to Utica Eisenhower (3-2).

RETURNING STARTERS: Alyssa Wesley, sr. D (Grand Valley State); Shannon Inglis, sr. F (Heidelburg University); Megan Malloy, sr. F; Katy Wagner, jr. M (Oakland); Maddie Hutchinson, jr. M; Katie Rohlfs, jr. D; Dana Schrauben, jr. D; Hannah Kish, soph. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Cailin Nylen, sr. D (Baldwin-Wallace); Jessica Pfister, jr. D; Cassie Thelen, jr. M; Sarah Quattrochi, jr. F; Haley Barnes, jr. G; Lauren Oberheim, jr. G.

KEY LOSSES: Julianne Boyle (Oakland; first-team all-state), Jamie Tasco, Hailey Redd, G (second-team all-state), Allegra Rechnagel, Taylor Tremonti.

NOTABLES: Since winning its first district championship in 2000, the Dragons have become a annual top-10 team in Oakland County, averaging double-digit win seasons in that span; this year’s team may not have the offensive firepower and the coaching staff will have to break in a new goaltender, but do not count this team out come tournament time; there are still several college-bound players on the roster and talent to contend for a district crown.

SCHOOL: Lake Orion Baptist

HEAD COACH: Mike French, first season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 7-7, 3-2 FBAC (third).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in MACS first round.

RETURNING STARTERS: Jill Streetman, jr. G; Meagan Jenkins, sr. F/M; Sarah Crawford, jr. D; Hannah Harris, jr. D; Abigail Brennan, fr. F; Miranda Jenkins, soph. S; Katie Brundage, jr. D; Kara Sanders, soph. M/F;

OTHER RETUNREES: Emily Lohnes, jr. M; Lauren Guba, soph. F/M; Kim Fisher, soph. D/M; Rachel Brundage, fr. G; McKenna Cameron, fr. F; Megan Crawford, fr. F; Noelle Streetman, fr. M/F; Breanne Watterworth, fr. M/F/G.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Julina Moreno, sr. M/F (did not play last season after starting as sophomore; all-league in volleyball and basketball); Kaleigh Cameron, jr. D; Angie Cone, fr. M; Kelsey MacDonald,. Fr. M; Hallie Vawter, fr. M/F; Hannah Wixom, fr. M.

KEY LOSSES: Hannah Moore, D; Cassie Crawford, D.

NOTABLES: Mike French, the assistant last season who helped the Lions’ boys team reach the MACS Division II state finals last fall, takes over the helm and has 22 players to work with, many who are returning from last season; nine regular starters and several returnees will mix in with four new players; there are 22 players on the varsity roster, the most in the nine years of the school and only a few shy of creating a junior varsity team.

SCHOOL: Oxford

HEAD COACH: Larry Ferris, second season.

2010 RECORD: 6-11-3, 4-4-1 Flint Metro League (fifth).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 districts to Romeo (3-1).

RETURNING STARTERS: Amanda Roth, sr. F/M; Sarah Stroope, sr. G; Chelsea Johnson, jr. F/M; Brianna Johnson, jr. F/M; Paige Brinker, jr. M/D; Beth Downs, sr. M/F.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Samantha Medici, fr. M/F.

KEY LOSSES: Sara Ricketts, S (Rochester College); Kelsey Littman, D (Rochester College); Joy Gaberstien, D.

NOTABLES: Oxford joins the OAA White Division after competing in the FML since its program started in the late 1980s;the Wildcats began 1-0-1 before the break by tying Birmingham Groves (0-0) and blanking Ferndale (5-0); The Wildcats do have plenty of experience with 15 of 20 players back in uniform, and with a clean slate with a new league, Oxford does not have huge expectations, so they can play under the radar and hope to knock off a few of the league favorites.

SCHOOL: Rochester

HEAD COACH: Todd Heugh, 11th season.

2010 RECORD: 6-4-5, 3-2-5 OAA Red Division (fourth).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 district opener to Rochester Adams (1-0, 2OT).

RETURNING STARTERS: Sara Sikoski, sr. M (Ferris State University); Laura Ivezaj, sr. GK (Saginaw Valley State); Jessica Nieman, sr. D (University of South Dakota);

McKenzie Chilcote, jr. D; Madeline Chilcote, soph. M/D; Jenny Goethals, soph. M; Riyane Williams, sr. F.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Stephanie Sikorski, soph. M/F; Sofia Farah, soph. F; Maria Lepore, jr. M; Abby Rawling, jr. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Emily Diener, jr. D (transfer from Macomb Lutheran North); Jenna Maletzke, soph. D.

KEY LOSSES: Amanda Anton (West Virginia; honorable-mention all-state); Hilary Braun, D (Ferris State); Haley Burtraw, M (Central Michigan; second-team all-state).

NOTABLES: The Falcons fought through injuries last season but still only lost four games, and they set a school record with nine ties; this team is young with as many as eight sophomores and is a typical Heugh-coached team, very sound defensively; if the Falcons can find some scoring punch, their Achilles heel last season, this could be a dangerous team come June.

SCHOOL: Rochester Adams

HEAD COACH: Aaron Donahy, third season.

2010 RECORD: 14-3-3, 8-1-1 OAA Red Division (first).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 state semifinals to Novi (1-0); district, regional champs.

RETURNING STARTERS: Mackenzie Barber, soph. F; Merlin Beckwith, jr. M (honorable-mention all-state); Brittany Buckler, sr. D (honorable-mention all-state); Hannah Lee, jr. M (honorable-mention all-state); Kylie Nylen, jr. D (second-team all-state); Allison Reed, soph. M; Kelsey Treamore, jr. D; Jessica Wineke, sr. G (second-team all-state).

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Lauren Boyle, jr.; Maddie Christiensen, jr.; Julie Genouw, jr.; Macy Houghtlin, jr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Tiffany Buckler, fr. D;Jessie Brown, jr.; Lexi Lewendowski, jr.; Rachel Lamb, sr.; Shannon McDevitt, fr.; Laura Montes, jr.; Rachel Wehbe, jr.

KEY LOSSES: Brittany Campbell, D; Casey Thal, D.

NOTABLES: With a young team last season, the Highlanders surprised some b y winning league, district and regional titles before advancing to the Final Four; now with nine starters back and plenty of the weapons needed to make another long tournament run, this could be Adams’ best team since winning the Division 1 state crown in 1999.

SCHOOL: Rochester Stoney Creek

HEAD COACH: Bryan Mittlestadt, first season.

2010 RECORD: 6-8-4, 3-5-2 OAA Red Division (seventh).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost to Utica Eisenhower in Division 1 district opener (1-0).

RETURNING STARTERS: Tori Anderson, sr. G; Maddie Michaels, sr. M; Carly Frensly, sr. M; Joanie Sieja, jr. F; Maddie Lucci, jr. M; Lauren Bolhuis, jr. D; Allison Tayloe, sr. M/D; Kelsie Darin, sr. D.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Sam Boyle, jr. M; Jillian Longton, sr.  D.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Cierra Inscho, soph. D; Hannah Darin, soph. D; Alexa Joh, soph. M; Carina Wilden, fr. M; Sydney Inscho, fr. D; Halee Michel, fr. G; Morgan Darin, fr. D; Sarah Votaw, jr. D; Lizzie Roeser, jr. F/M.

KEY LOSSES: Abby Haelewyn, M (honorable-mention all-state); Stephanie Carter, F (leading scorer).

NOTABLES: For the first time in the nine-year history of Stoney Creek, the Cougars will have a new coach, as Erin Rodger stepped down to help raise a family; there is some talent on the roster, although expectations will be higher in the future as Stoney Creek is expected to bring in some talented players the next two years this may be a rebuilding or middle-of-the-pack year this season.

SCHOOL: Rochester Hills Christian

HEAD COACH: Jerry Slota, 10th season.

2010 RECORD: 7-5-1, 3-2 FBAC (third).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in MACS state semifinals to Clinton Township Faith Christian (3-2).

RETURNING STARTERS: Caroline Milsk, sr. D; Jane Crile, sr. M/F; Allise Dubay, jr. M/F; Sandra Mikail, sr. M; Alex Parker, soph. M; Ashley Baker, sr. F; Megan Steiner, sr. G; Ally Ashcraft, soph. D.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Courtney Patton, fr. D; Jenna Porter, fr. D.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Brooke Adams, soph. M/F; Cayla Carr, fr. M.

KEY LOSSES: Anca Rymer, D.

NOTABLES: On paper, this should be the Eagles best season, as they have as many as nine seniors, many that will start; there are 15 returnees overall on a 21-player roster and the Eagles should contend for their first league title; the only negative will be the first week of the state tournament, where school officials scheduled the annual senior trip, where those nine seniors will be out of town; the Eagles lost with 1:50 left in last year’s state semifinals and blew a 2-0 lead with 16 minutes to play.

SCHOOL: Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest

HEAD COACH: Melissa VanGorden, fourth season.

2010 RECORD: 9-8-0, 8-0-0 MIAC Red Division (first).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 4 district opener to Royal Oak Shrine Catholic (6-2).

KEY RETURNEES: Megan Rousso, soph.; Abbey Looker, jr.; Haylee Luedtke (all-league); Kallie Washburn, jr.; Kim Lepor; jr.; Jillian McLoughlin, sr.

KEYLOSSES: Cayla Vangorden, M (all-league); Lauren Neumeyer, G (all-league); Mary Catherine-Goddard, M.

NOTABLES: After winning the MIAC Red Division in their first season in the league, the Crusaders bump up to the MIAC-Blue Division this season as their reward; the team’s previous league title in girls soccer was 1993; there is still some holdover talent from that squad, but Northwest must work in a new goaltender and a large freshman class for a team that will play a much tougher schedule this season.

SCHOOL: Troy

HEAD COACH: Brian Zawislak, third season.

2010 RECORD: 15-4-4, 6-2-2 OAA Red Division (third).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 1 regional finals to Novi; district champs.

RETURNING STARTERS: Emily Dzik, sr. M (second-team all-state; Eastern Michigan); Irene Young, jr. F (honorable-mention all-state; Louisville); Erin Farley, sr. D (all-league, all-district); Madison Hirsch, soph. F; Erin Wrubel, soph. M; Jennifer Busk, jr. M (injured part of last season); Rachel Shamoun, jr. D.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Alison Holland, soph. G (Division I recruit); Kelsey  Horbach, sr. D; Jenna Gardner, sr. F; Megan Shelly, sr. M; Jamie Hawkey, soph. D; Alyssa Cabelof,  jr. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Mallika Wahawan, sr. G; Corinne Holland, sr. F; Amelia Troccoli, jr. F; Sara Wideman, soph. M; Nadine Bratu, soph. D; Kayla Porter, soph. M; Plylisha Drayton, fr. F; Jenna Cabelof, fr. M.

KEY LOSSES: Madeline Wideman, M (first-team all-state); Victoria Troccoli, G (first-team all-state; Drexel); Madison Pines, (honorable-mention all-state).

NOTABLES: The perennial powerful Colts may have lost three all-state players to graduation, but there’s reason to believe that Troy will be just as good, if not better than last year, when they dominated Novi in the regional finals but still fell 1-0; there are 13 players back in uniform, including seven starters, and the Colts’ 3-0 shutout of Troy Athens showcased that Troy is still one of the state’s top teams; watch for Holland to be one of the area’s top goalkeepers in her first season as a starter, while Drayton is a speedy forward who should make an impact on the offensive end around several highly-touted players.

SCHOOL: Troy Athens

HEAD COACH: Tim Storch, 27th season.

2010 RECORD: 14-4-1, 8-2-1 OAA Red Division (second).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost to Troy in Division 1 district opener (1-0).

RETURNING STARTERS: Jenna O’Dell, sr. G (committed to Iowa State, ODP regional goalkeeper, first-team all-state two years ago); Marisa Kozikowski, sr. D (second-team all-state, Eastern Michigan); Leah Schmitz, sr. F (Eastern Michigan, led team in scoring last season); Olivia Brannon, sr. M (first-team all-state as a sophomore, injured last season; member of U-18 national team; signed with Virginia); Haley Svrcina, sr. D/F (Indiana Wesleyan, sr. D/F; Maggie Leone, sr. F; Sally Zimmerman, sr. D; Megan Bart, sr. D; Liz Abro, soph. M (honorable-mention all-state).

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Gabby Mancini, soph. M; Carrie Thor, sr. D; Natalie Sabourin, jr. M; Rachel Senopole, jr. M/D; Hailey Black, sr. M.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Kendall Wachowski, fr. F/M; Tami Sanchez-Ortiz, jr. M; Morgan Behn, soph. M; Rachel Martens, soph. D; Erin Carmona, jr. F.

KEY LOSSES: Jordan Penz, D (Oakland); Megan McLalin, M (Detroit-Mercy)

NOTABLES: The Red Hawks, if healthy, have the make-up of a team that could make a run to the Final Four; this is talented and deep team and the return of Brannon, one of the nation’s best, could be a problem for the opposition if the Red Hawks get on a roll come tourney time; there are several standout players who are heading off to the college ranks next season, while Abro is a player on the rise; Athens is 1-1 heading into the spring break, falling to Troy but beating Rochester Stoney Creek.

SCHOOL: Troy Bethany Christian

HEAD COACH: Theresa Clarke, second season.

2010 RECORD: 7-4-0, 3-2 FBAC (tied-second).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in MACS state semifinals to Troy Bethany Christian (3-2).

RETURNING STARTERS: Jessica Oja, jr. F; Grassi, jr. M/F; Anna Tomkowiak, jr. M (all-league); Sarah Tomkowiak, soph. D (all-league); Sarah Davis, sr.; M/D; Katie Schultz, sr. D; Staci Green, jr. D; Hannah Clarke,  jr. D; Joy Lampert, jr. G; Rachel Waldrup, jr. D/M; Lianna Sprankle, soph. M.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Becca Ward, jr. F; Natalie Steenbergh, jr. F.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Clorine Oloffo, soph. F; Carolyn Michelle Tremper, soph. G/D.

KEY LOSSES: Jaclyn Oja, F; Carryle Zaldariaga, M; Ashley McKeown, D.

NOTABLES: The Bruins, who won four straight MACS state titles from 2006-2009, lost in the semifinals last season and are looking to rediscover former glory with most of its teams back; Bethany Christian has three of the top players in the FBAC with the Tomkowiak sisters, plus Lampert in goal; the Bruins already took a huge step in the right direction last week by defeating defending league champion Clinton Township Faith Christian, 3-1, with that team also serving as the state runner-up last season as well.

SCHOOL: Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes-Clarkston Everest Collegiate Unified.

HEAD COACH: Rich Ludwig, fourth season.

2010 RECORD: 17-1-1, 8-0-0 CHSL (first).

STATE TOURNAMENT: District, regional, Division 4 state champions; defeated Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic 2-1in the state finals.

KEY RETURNING: Megan Topolewski, sr. M (Toledo; first-team all-state); Abbey Troy, sr. D (Detroit-Mercy; first-team all-state); Ava Doetsch, soph. F; Chantelle Ludwig, sr. F; Jessica Parry, soph. F.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Large freshman class, including some club players.

KEY LOSSES: Only lost one key contributor.

NOTABLES: In only its third season with a girls program (previously, girls at Lakes played on the boys team), this team came out of nowhere to win the Division 4 state crown; the bad news for the rest of Division 4 is that the Lakers not only return 10 starters and some key reserves, but also bring in a quality freshmen class; this team also has two Division I college recruits, so it’s not your typical D-4 squad; expect WOLL to be in the hunt for another state title come June.
