SAGINAW TOWNSHIP — State semifinalists last season, Rochester Adams has picked up right where it left off on the soccer pitch.
The Highlanders added three more wins to their total Saturday, winning three games to win the Saginaw Heritage Invitational at the Saginaw Soccer Complex.
Adams, which is 8-1-2 on the season, defeated Brighton (3-0), Saginaw Heritage (2-1) and Rockford (4-0) for a 9-1 scoring edge en route to the team title.
“I think what I like about this team is our balance,” said Adams coach Aaron Donaghy, whose team’s only loss was a 1-0 setback to Troy. “We don’t have that one player who is going to dominate, but we have a lot of girls that can score and we are solid defensively.”
Mackenzie Barber tallied four goals on the day for Adams, including a hat trick against Rockford. Allison Reed added three goals, and Merlin Beckwith and Hannah Lee scored one goal each for the Highlanders.
Jessica Wineke posted the shutout in the Brighton game and combined with Lexi Lewandowski for the shutout against Rockford, giving Adams six shutouts on the season.
“We have some things to work on, but we are a veteran team as we lost only one starter,” said Donaghy, whose team leads the OAA Red Division ahead of Troy and Troy Athens. “We felt, going in, that we could be one of the top teams. But thinking that and doing that is a different story. We seem to have everyone on the same page right now, which is a good thing and I think we’re only going to get better.”
