DAVISON — With only two seniors and an inexperienced pitching staff, wins have been hard to come by for Lake Orion Baptist’s baseball team this season.

The Lions found someone to pick on in A Michigan Association of Christian Schools sectional opener.

Lake Orion Baptist wasted little time in defeating second-year program Corunna Immanuel Christian Tuesday, collecting 12 hits and rolling to a 15-0, four-inning mercy win over the Fire at Davison Faith Baptist.

“We put them away in a hurry. This is good for us. We needed this win, because we’ve had so many rainouts,” said veteran coach Bill Welby. “Our starting pitcher hurt his thumb, and we used three other guys. As it turned out, it didn’t matter. We were up on them 5-0n in the first inning.”

Conner Welby was 2-for-2, walked twice and scored four runs for the Lions (4-10-1). James Noruk was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Elijah Cone 2-for-3 with four RBI and Jacob Noruk added two hits for Lake Orion Baptist.

The Lions scored five in the first to take control, added five more in the third and five in the fourth to end the game.

Four different Lions rotated on the mound to combine for the no-hitter — Mark Dewar, Jacob Noruk, Nathan Shefcyk and James Noruk.

“They only put the ball into play three times. The third time they hit the ball up the middle and we made a nice play to get the (lead) runner on a fielder’s choice. That was it,” said Welby. “I know they are a newer program, but we beat them pretty easily with a very young team.”

The Lions will face defending state champion Davison Faith Baptist on Thursday 1:30 p.m. in the second round.

“When we played Faith (Baptist) earlier in the year, they beat us 6-5 in the first game and 10-0 in the second game,” said Welby. “I don’t think we have ever beaten them in the tournament and it seems like we run into them almost every year. We’ll see who they throw. We can go with our (No. 1) James Noruk and see what happens.”
