MORE DIVISION 1 DISTRICTS

ROCHESTER 1, STERLING HEIGHTS 0: After finishing as the state runner-up in 2007, Rochester had had no luck in the postseason, losing in the districts the past three years.

In fact, the Falcons failed to win a single district game in that span, falling to Adams in the second round in 2008, to Troy Athens in the first round in 2009 and again to Adams in double-overtime in last year’s district opener.

This time around Rochester gained a first-half goal from Sophia Farrah and Laura Ivezaj made it stand with six saves for the Falcons (11-6-2), who advanced to Thursday’s second round against Clinton Township Chippewa Valley.  Sara Sikorski drew the assist on Farrah’s marker.

“We hadn’t won a single game in the postseason since we finished as the state runner-up,” recalled Rochester coach Todd Heugh. “We’ve had some pretty tough district matchups the past three years and lost all of them. Finally, we got a better draw and we’re able to win a game.”

Sterling Heights finishes 8-7-2.

TROY ATHENS 4, STERLING HEIGHTS STEVENSON 1: Twice in the past eight years, Stevenson was able to use the upset bug to knock out Athens from the postseason. The Red Hawks broke open a 1-1 game in the final 35 minutes to post this home win Tuesday over the Titans.

Maggie Leone score in the first half for Athens. After Stevenson’s Sarah Smith tied the game,  Olivia Brannon scored the final three goals for the Red Hawks (17-2-0), who advance to Thursday’s district semifinal at Stevenson against Utica Ford, a 1-0 victory Tuesday over Utica.

“I think our seniors stepped it up in the second half,” said Athens coach Tim Storch. “I thought we came out a little more aggressive and were able to score a few goals on them. I remember a few years ago when we were tied 1-1 with them and we ended up losing in a shootout.

Jenna O’Dell picked up the shutout between the pipes for Athens.

ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK 4, ORTONVILLE BRANDON 0: The Cougars road trip to Ortonville proved to be fruitful as they returned with this shutout victory to advance to Thursday’s district semifinals against Rochester Adams.

Joanie Seiaj scored two goals to lead Stoney Creek. Maddie Michaels and Allison Tayloe each had a goal, Maddie Lucci chipped in with two assists and Halee Michael had the shutout for the Cougars (11-6-0).

Brandon finishes the year with a 3-13-0 record.

WATERFORD KETTERING 2, LAKE ORION 1: The Captains took advantage of shorthanded Lake Orion Tuesday and sailed away with the 2-1 upset in a Division 1 district opener over the Dragons. Shelby Watts scored two goals and Tailer Roscoe made 14 saves in goal for Kettering (4-11-2).

Maddie Hutchinson scored for Lake Orion.

DIVISION 4

WATERFORD OUR LADY OF THE LAKES 9, ROCHESTER HILLS LUTHERAN NORTHWEST 1: The march towards a repeat began Tuesday in Rochester Hills and the Lakers received very little resistance from the Crusaders. Ava Doetsch led the offensive attack with four goals and two assists, while Megan Topolewski also added the hat trick for WOLL (14-0-1), which led 5-0 at the half. Anna Robb and Jessica Parry also scored for the Lakers and Chantel Ludwig made two saves in the win in goal.
