Top-ranked Oakland Christian cruises to district golf title

HOLLY — With four of the top six finishers in the field, top-ranked Auburn Hills Oakland Christian opened up the postseason by winning Thursday’s Division 4 boys golf district in convincing fashion.

The Lancers had five in the top 10 in the play-five, count-four setup at Heather Highlands near Holly.

Oakland Christian’s Tyler Coyne tied for second (77), followed by Paul Klemme in fourth (78), Jon VanNoord in fifth (80) and Zach Preuss sixth (81). Nick VanBriesbrouck finished ninth (84) but did not figure into the Lancers’ scoring.

The top six teams, plus the top six individuals not on the top six teams, advance to regional play June 9 at Westwynd Golf Course in Oakland Township.

Southfield Christian was a distant second with 348. Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes-Clarkston Everest collegiate Unified claimed third (353), followed by Royal Oak Shrine Catholic (361), Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest (367) and Grosse Pointe Woods University-Liggett (374), as those schools all advanced.

Marine City Cardinal Mooney was the first team left on the outside looking in with 1 375, missing by a stroke. Novi Franklin Road Christian (383), Birmingham Roeper (383), Sterling Heights Parkway Christian (388) and West Bloomfield Jewish Academy (443) .

Franklin Road Christian’s Nick Ward was medalist with a four-over round of 76, just ahead of Everest Collegiate’s David Smith (77) and Oakland Christian’s Coyne (77), which tied for second.

Following Oakland Christian’s trio of Klemme, VanNoord and Preuss, Cardinal Mooney’s Garrison Glowniak (82) was seventh with Southfield Christian’s Krick Collin (82), VanBiesbrouck (84), Franklin Road Christian Josh Ward (85) and Parkway Christian’s Jared Line (85) rounded out the top10.

The Ward brothers, Glowniak, Line, Roeper’s Jordon Vekkette (12th, 86) and Cardinal Mooney’s Oliver Hopton (22nd, 91) were the six individual qualifiers.
