Brannon, Young pace 26 local all-state soccer players

As expected, Troy Athens senior Olivia Brannon was named the 2011 Miss Soccer by the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association, leading 26 all-state players from the www.northoaklandsports.com coverage area.

Brannon is on the 11-member all-state Dream Team, which also includes 10 other standout players from around the state, including eight seniors and three juniors.

Novi senior midfielder Nicki Caruso, Portage Central senior forward Paige Webster, the 2009 Miss soccer winner and three-time Dream Team selection, Linden senior midfielder Mary Kathryn-Fiebernitz, Troy junior forward Irene Young, Grand Rapids Catholic Central senior forward Alex Heffron, Portage Central senior midfielder Taylore Peterson, Birmingham Marian senior forward Mathra Stevens, DeWitt senior forward Erica Goodenough, Novi senior forward Nikki Greenlaugh and Hudsonville Unity Christian junior goalkeeper Holly VanNoord.

In each division, there are three teams and an honorable mention list. Each team features 14 field players and two goalkeepers, while there are 52 honorable mention per division on the all-state lists, bringing the total to 400 players from Michigan High School Athletic Association schools on the annual list.

A coach must be a member of the MHSSCA for their players to make all-district, all-region and all-state.

As for area players, Athens’ Brannon, Troy’s Alison Holland, Emily Dzik and Irene Young and Rochester Adams’ Kylie Nylen were all on the Division 1 All-State First Team.

Merlin Beckwith of Adams and Athens’ Jenna O’Dell made the second-team, while Adams’ Brittany Buckler and Jessica Wineke and Athens’ Marisa Kozikowski were named to the third-team.

Six additional players from the area were named honorable mention in D-1, including Rochester’s Jessica Nieman and Laura Ivezaj, Adams’ Hannah Lee and McKenzie Barber, Athens’ Leah Schmitz and Troy’s Erin Farley.

In Division 2, Auburn Hills Avondale had three all-state honorees this year. Andrea Strauss and Regina Nofs both earned first-team status, while Madison Duncan earned third-team honors for the Yellowjackets.

In D-4, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes-Clarkston Everest Unified had an area-best six all-state selections, while Auburn Hills Oakland Christian had two postseason honorees.

Lakes-Everest’s Ava Doetsch, Meghan Topolewski and Chantelle Ludwig made the first-team, Abbey Troy and Jessica Parry were listed on the second team and Anna Robb as honorable mention.

Tori Johns and Darcy Johnston, both from Oakland Christian, also made the honorable mention list in D-4.
