OXFORD — Being a three-sport athlete, choices are plentiful in terms of colleges for Prescott Line. The senior-to-be at Oxford High school knows only one school he would like to attend in the future.

Line will be taking his talents to the heart of Texas.

The 6-foot, 220-pound running back-linebacker made a oral commitment to Southern Methodist University last week, where he will join his brother on the Mustangs’ football team in 2012.

“It was the best place for me,” admitted Line, who was also an individual state champion at 215 pounds on the Wildcats’ wrestling team that won the Division 1 team state championship as well. “I really want to play football in college. I like wrestling, but don’t want to do that in college.”

Line had a fine junior season, earning All-OAA White Division, All-Area First Team and All-County Honorable Mention honors. His best football is yet to come and Line is already looking forward to playing in college.

“I can’t wait,” admitted Line, who led the Wildcats with 95 tackles last season and had over 400 rushing yards to his credit, being used in short-yardage situations.

Line, who also throws the shot put around 46 feet and the discus around 130 feet in track and field, should be one of the top 25 football players and wrestlers in Oakland County this season. In wrestling, he posted a 44-3 record last winter and that included a county, league, district, regional and state championship.

Line’s older brother, Zach Line, was also a three-sport athlete at Oxford and is a junior at SMU, playing in two straight bowl games for the Mustangs. That helped lead to the recruitment of the younger Prescott.

“I really like their business school,” said Line, who is eyeing that as a major. “I really liked the campus, the coaches. I felt like I fit in down there. My brother is down there, so that helps.”

Air Force, Michigan State, Michigan, Central Michigan and Toledo were some of the other D-I schools that Line had been speaking to in recent months.

“It’s nice to get that done with before the season starts,” admitted Line. “I didn’t want the distractions.”

Line and his teammates, who will debut their new blue turf field this month, don’t need any distractions at the moment, only concentration on improving on last season’s dismal 3-6 record — the school’s first losing season in nearly 30 years.

“I think we’re going to be a lot better,” predicted Line. “We’re very experienced. We have most of our guys back. That is the focus right now. Getting ready for the season and getting Oxford football back to where it needs to be.”
