OU’s Hudson signs pro contract with Australia’s Gold Coast Blaze
ROCHESTER HILLS — Former Oakland University standout Will Hudson signed a professional contract with the Gold Coast Blaze of the National Basketball League (NBL) in Australia on Monday, announced OU coach Greg Kampe.
Hudson was an All-Summit League Second Team selection in his final season at OU in 2010-11 and set the Oakland single-season record with 133 offensive rebounds.
“We are really pleased and happy for him,” said Kampe. “It’s a lifelong dream that has come true for Will and it’s special that we at Oakland University had a part in it. We are very excited for him.”
The 6-foot-9 forward from Madison, Wisc., was a huge part of Oakland’s back-to-back Summit League Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. Hudson’s senior year was his best, averaging 12.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. With 1,023 career points, he became just the 29th player in Oakland history to surpass the 1,000-point plateau.
“We believe that if he has a good year in Australia, next year he will have a chance to go to an NBA camp,” said Kampe.
The NBL only allows two non-native players on the roster at one time. The NBL plays a 28-game schedule from October to March. Hudson leaves on Thursday to begin preseason workouts with his new team.
