GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM CAPSULES

Below are the 2011 girls volleyball team capsules for the high schools located in the www.northoaklandsports.com coverage region. Capsules compiled by NOS staff. Coaches wishing to submit additional information can do so by e-mailing senior editor Dan Stickradt at dan.stickradt@northoaklandsports.com

SCHOOL: Auburn Hills Oakland Christian

HEAD COACH: Priscilla Larned, 26th season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 44-13-4, 7-3 MIAC Blue Division (third place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class D regional finals to Plymouth Christian (3-1).

RETURNING STARTERS: Darcy Johnston, 5-11 sr. MH; Becky Van Sloten, 6-0 jr. MH; Erin Washington, 5-9 jr. S.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Emily Wurm, 5-8 sr. OH.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Marcella Compeau, 5-9 soph.

KEY LOSSES: Lost three starters to graduation plus two reserves that opted not to return.

NOTABLES: One of the most consistent small-school programs in the state, Oakland Christian will make the leap up to Class C for the postseason for the first time. Expected to be a front-runner in the MIAC Blue Division again this season, this team will be young but talented. The Lancers do not have the depth as in past years due to a lower turnout at tryouts last month.

SCHOOL: Clarkston

HEAD COACH: Kelly Avenall, eighth season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 48-4-1, 8-0-0 OAA Red Division.

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A state quarterfinals to Farmington Hills Mercy (3-1).

RETURNING STARTERS: Stephanie Marani, 6-1 sr. MH (broke 20-year-old single-season blocks record last season with 171; committed to Princeton); blocking record last year with 174 blocks for the season); Maddie Lightfoot, 5-4 sr. L (committe3d to New Hampshire); Rachel Dickerson, 5-9 jr. OH.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Angela Niezgoda, 5-4 sr. DS; Kaley Konjarevich, 5-10 jr. OH.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Brianna Frakes, 5-9 soph. S; Katie Chadwell, 5-10 soph. MH.

KEY LOSSES: Allison Reis, 5-10 OH/L (Niagara); Alexis Egler, 5-11 MB/OH; Haley Barker, 5-5 sr. S/DS; Megan McCarty, 5-10 OH; Jessica Frakes, DS; Jamie Goryca, DS.

NOTABLES: Back-to-back seasons with 40 or more wins has helped Clarkston emerge as a state power, and the 2010 season was perhaps the Wolves’ best to date; Clarkston has now won 10 districts dating back to 1997 and six in Avenall’s first seven seasons; the Wolves have also reached at least the Sweet 16 four times in 14 seasons, including 1998, 2005, 207 and 2010; they have also finished in the top half of the league each year under Avenall.

SCHOOL: Clarkston Everest Collegiate

HEAD COACH: Jeff Stencel, first season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: None.

STATE TOURNAMENT: None in 2010; will compete in class D this season.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Claire Kitz, 5-8 fr. MH; Shannon McDunnough, 5-5 fr. S; Megan Luttinen, 5-4 fr. DS.

KEY LOSSES: None, first-year program.

NOTABLES: This is the first season of varsity competition for Everest Collegiate, which is in its fourth year with a high school but will produce its first senior class. The Mountaineers will leap into the foray of varsity competition with mostly freshmen and sophomores and will play a wide variety of small-schools to help get their feet wet.

SCHOOL: Clarkston Springfield Christian

HEAD COACH: Laura Key, first season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 1-19-0, 1-7-0 FBAC Red Division (fifth place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in MACS Division II opener to Bridgeport Baptist.

KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: Taylor Key, 5-3 sr. S; Savannah Berlinski, 5-8 jr. MB; Emily Grant, 5-5 soph. DS; Lauren Key, 5-4 soph. OH; Marissa Cimini, 5-4 soph. DS; Heather Key, 5-3 fr. DS.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Heather Key, 5-3 fr. DS; Abigail Jones, 5-4 fr. DS/OH; Arrin Jones, 5-5 fr. OH/DS; Heather Comstock, 5-3 fr. OH/DS.

KEY LOSSES: Megan Kaster, 5-9 jr. (all-league; not playing); Carissa Royer, 5-11 jr. MB (transferred to Burton Genesee Christian); Rachel Matthew, 5-5 DS/S (graduated).

NOTABLES: The Eagles have a new coach and an extremely young team with only one senior and one junior; what hurts this team even further is that its top three players from last year are gone, one that transferred, one that is taking the season off and another that graduated; with several sophomores and freshmen gaining

SCHOOL: Holly

HEAD COACH: Jamie Jones.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 12-19-3, 1-7 Flint Metro League (eighth place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A districts to Swartz Creek.

RETURNING STARTERS: Hannah Timm, sr. OH; Melissa Bott, sr.MH; Ashley Wohlfeil, sr. L.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Shelby Wohfeil, sr. S; Megan Piwowarski, jr. MH.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Nicole Hiltner, jr. OH; Sierra Haneline, sr. OH; Adrienne Cheff, soph. S; Grace Vivanco, jr. OH; Kate Nitowski, soph. OH; Brie Wilson, sr. OH.

KEY LOSSES: Lost four key players to graduation.

NOTABLES: After finishing eighth out of nine schools in the Flint Metro League last fall, there’s really only way for the Bronchos to go but up. There are seven returnees on a roster of 11 and that experience, plus the bitter taste of a losing campaign fresh in their memories, could spearhead some major improvement.

HAMMER IT HOME: Lake Orion's Liz Kalugar and the Dragons should be one of the area's most talented teams in 2011. File Photo | Larry McKee, www.lmckeephotography.com

SCHOOL: Lake Orion

HEAD COACH: Bob Howey, sixth season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 41-16-7, 4-4 OAA Red Division (fifth place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A regional finals to Birmingham Marian (3-1).

RETURNING STARTERS: Shannon Murdock, 5-11 sr. OH (all-league, all-region, all- state honorable-mention; 394 kills); Liz Kalugar, 5-9 sr. OH (all-region with 394 kills);

Maddie Hutchison, 5-6 sr. L (all-league, all-region; 1,094 digs); Dana Schrauben, 5-8 sr. S.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Taylor Hargraves, 5-9 sr. OH (235 kills); Sophie Murdock, 6-2 jr. MB; Kristina Hill, 5-5 sr. DS; Gwen Motley, 5-8 sr. S; Angelica LeDonne, 5-10 sr. MB; Gabby Kalugar, 5-2 jr. DS.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Melanie Heath, jr. OH; Emily Kipp, jr. MB; Rachel Livingway, jr. DS; Kiana Brown, jr. OH; Sabrina Cottrell, jr. S; Rebecca Sylvain, jr. S.

KEY LOSSES: Alyssa Wesley, 5-7 S; Linnea Berriman, 5-11 MB (Adrian College; all-state in track with discus).

NOTABLES: After an up-and-down league season last year, the Dragons made a long run in the postseason, reaching the regional finals (Sweet 16) for the first time since 1988; the Dragons also captured over 40 wins for the first time since that ’88 season; with most of the roster back in uniform, including 10 total players and six players that started games, there are some extremely high expectations Lake Orion.

SCHOOL: Oxford

HEAD COACH: Kristi McDevitt, 10th season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 39-18-10, 7-1 OAA White Division (second place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A district opener to Rochester (3-1).

RETURNING STARTERS: Darien Bandel, 5-10 soph. MH; Lindsey Leppek, 5-9 sr. MH; Katelyn Bearse, 5-9 sr. OH; Maggie Rourke, 5-3 sr. L.

KEY NEWCOMERS: There are 10 newcomers on a 15-player roster, creating ample opportunity for players hoping to gain minutes.

KEY LOSSES: Kate Bailey, 5-9 sr. OH (opted not to return); Tammy Toteff, 5-9 OH.

NOTABLES: Oxford fared reasonably well in their first-ever season in the OAA last winter, finishing second in the OAA-White and winning the league tournament. This season the OAA switched up divisions and Oxford will join defending OAA-White champ Rochester Adams as newcomers in the OAA Red Division.

SCHOOL: Rochester

HEAD COACH: Lauren Duquette, first season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 25-19-3, 4-3 OAA Red Division (fourth place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A district finals to Lake Orion (3-0).

RETURNING STARTERS: Stephanie Sikorski, 5-10 jr. S; Maggie Irvine: 5-11 sr. MH.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Taylor Clift, 5-7 sr. S; Whitney Armold, 5-10 jr. OH; Catie Wiacek, 5-8 soph. OH; Nina Pacella, 5-6 sr. OH/DS; Danielle Smith, 5-8 sr. OH;

KEY NEWCOMERS: Sophia Menzo, 5-8 soph. OH; Mikayla Baxter, 5-4 soph., DS.

KEY LOSSES: Erin Leppek, 6-0 MB (Iowa); Christine Grawburg, 6-0 MB (Ferris State)

NOTABLES: The Falcons have their fourth head coach in 10 years with the arrival of Lauren Duquette, a former standout at Oakland University. Rochester

SCHOOL: Rochester Adams

HEAD COACH: Raey Zoellner, sixth season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 35-6-2, 7-0 OAA White Division (first place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A district semifinals to Lake Orion (3-2).

RETURNING STARTERS: Jennifer Gerlach, 5-10 jr. OH/MH; Lexi Lewandowski, 5-10 sr. MH.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Marissa Ratzenberger, 5-5 soph. L; Allie Recchia, 5-8 sr. S; Erika Rosinski, 5-8 sr. OH; Karissa Roveda, 5-10 sr. MB; Sophie Smith, 5-8 jr. OH/S.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Jessica Howell, 6-6 jr. DS (transfer from Oxford; all-state in track);

Marissa Kienzle, 5-7 jr. DS; Caley Panton, 5-9 jr. OH/MB; Katie Sickon, 5-5 jr. DS.

KEY LOSSES: Taylor Arney (all-league), Haley Hendricks (all-league), Alex Hubbard (all-league), Melanie Kipke, Caitie Brunotte.

NOTABLES: Adams posted one of its best seasons since the 1990s last season, winning 35 games and a league title before bowing out in the district semifinals in a five-game marathon match with Lake Orion. Adams graduated three all-league players from that squad and five from the regular rotation, meaning it will need for some different players to step up for the Highlanders in their new home, the OAA Red Division.

SCHOOL: Rochester Stoney Creek

HEAD COACH: Katie Pederson, fifth season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 16-23-4, 1-7 OAA White Division (seventh place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A district semifinals to Rochester (3-2).

RETURNING STARTERS: Lisa Kisil, 5-7 sr. OH (fourth-year varsity); Samantha Wingerter, 5-11 sr. OH (third-year varsity); Alexa Caporuscio, 5-9 jr. S; Jessie Sattmann, 5-10 jr. MB/OH.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Olivia Radtke, 5-11 sr. MB; Marionna Munaco, 5-5 sr. DS; Kelly Hoyer, 5-5 sr. DS.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Emily Hardy, 5-11 jr. MB; Natalie Voss, 6-0 soph. MB/OH.

KEY LOSSES: Christine Kim, 5-3 L (second-team all-area); Rayna Szatner, 5-7 OH.

NOTABLES: After an up-and-down season in 2010, the Cougars were two points way from reaching the district finals for the first time before Rochester rallied to oust them in five games. Stoney Creek has some talented younger players and an experienced senior class that hopes to climb up the standings after finishing seventh out of eight schools last season.

SCHOOL: Rochester Hills Christian

HEAD COACH: Mindy Thompson, 16th season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 21-3-0, 8-0-0 FBAC Red Division (first place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in MACS Division I state quarterfinals to Troy Bethany Christian (3-2).

RETURNING STARTERS: Allise Dubay, 5-2 sr. S (all-league).

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: None

KEY NEWCOMERS: Jenna Porter, 5-9 fr. OH.

KEY LOSSES: Graduated nine players and five starters, including 6-0 MB Megan Steiner.

NOTABLES: After setting multiple school records and winning its first league championship in school history, the Eagles were the top-ranked team in the state in the MACS but were upset in the state quarterfinals. There is only one returning player on the hole varsity roster and nine newcomers, so this could become a rebuilding campaign if some of the new players don’t fill in voids in a hurry.

SCHOOL: Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest

HEAD COACH: Heather Lower McDaniel, second season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 13-22-4, 4-6 MIAC Blue Division (sixth place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class C district opener to Bloomfield Hills Sacred Heart (4-6).

RETURNING STARTERS: Kim Lepor, 5-7 sr. L/OH; Stephanie Smith, 5-9 sr. OH; Abbey Looker, 5-7 sr. S.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Haley Todd, 5-8 sr. OH; Laura Dober, 5-10 sr. MB; Megan Hamilton, 5-5 sr. L/DS.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Kayla Kokko, 5-9 jr. MB.

KEY LOSSES: Jillian McLoughlin, 6-0 MB; Stacey Jacques, 5-7 OH; Chelsea Didio, 5-7 OH.

NOTABLES: Northwest has seen a revolving door of varsity, junior varsity and freshman coaches, leaving the program in constant turnover with only mild success. McDaniel, who recently married and now is Lower, is the first varsity coach to return for more than one seasons in nearly a decade.

SCHOOL: Troy

HEAD COACH: Ed Rule, second season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 16-26-5, 0-8 OAA Red Division (ninth place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A district semifinals to Auburn Hills Avondale.

RETURNING STARTERS: Nicole Hahn, 6-1 jr. MB; Michelle Steucheli, 6-0 sr. OH; Laney Hart, 5-3 sr. L; Lindsay Moeller, 5-11 jr. S; Taylor Marquardt, 5-8 sr. OH; Jen Thompson, 5-8 sr. OH.

OTHER KEY RETURNEES: Hope Keating, 5-9 jr. OH; Lexi Pullen, 5-10 jr. MH; Jess Baranowski, 5-3 sr. DS; Kristen Shetler, 5-2 sr. DS; Grace Goodrich, 5-7 jr. OH.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Olivia Parks, 6-0 soph. MB; Marcela Sanabria, 5-11 jr. MH.

KEY LOSSES: Monique Nguyen, 5-11 MB (all-league).

SCHOOL: Troy Athens

HEAD COACH: Christine Stanichuk, third season.

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 83-92-0, 1-7 OAA Red Division (eighth place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Class A district semifinals to Waterford Kettering (3-1).

KEY RETURNEES: Lisa Lavelanet, 5-8 sr. S; Danielle Cooper, 5-5 sr. L; Rachel Senopole, 5-10 sr. OH; Taylor Bommarito, 5-9 sr. MH; Emma Kollman, 5-5 sr. DS/L;

Erica Siismets, 5-9 jr. MH; Rachel Martens, 5-9 jr. DS; Haley Zemmer, 5-11 soph. OH.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Lauren Taylor, 5-8 jr. OH; Sarah Watson, 5-5 soph. DS/OH;

Dakota Stanichuk, 5-5 fr. S/OH.

KEY LOSSES: Jesse Camp, L; Maggie Leone, S (four-year starter).

NOTABLES: Athens drops down to the OAA White Division this season, where the Red Hawks will join Troy and Auburn Hills Avondale as the likely front-runners.

SCHOOL: Troy Bethany Christian

HEAD COACH: Shelly Tremper, 20th season (non-consecutive).

LAST YEAR’S RECORD: 14-7-0, 6-2 FBAC Red Division (second place).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in MACS state semifinals to

RETURNING STARTERS: Sarah Bishop, 5-7 soph. OH; Leanna Sprankle, 5-6 jr. OH; Staci Green, 5-4 sr. S (fourth-year starter); Rachel Waldrup, 5-7 sr. OH.

KEY LOSSES: Kim Garrick, 5-7 OH.

NOTABLES: For the first time in 11 years, the Bruins did not win a league championship in 2010. They made up for it by upsetting Rochester Hills Christian in the state quarterfinals and reached the MACS Division I Final Four for the 11th straight season; after a six-season hiatus, Tremper is back as head coach; she coached from 1986-2005 and makes her return to the sidelines in 2011; Bruins already own a win over Rochester Hills Christian and finished second at the Pittsford Freedom Farm Christian Tournament.
