| September 14, 2011 | Comments (19)

Below are the 2011 girls golf team capsules for the high schools located in the www.northoaklandsports.com coverage region. Capsules compiled by NOS staff. Coaches wishing to submit additional information can do so by e-mailing senior editor Dan Stickradt at dan.stickradt@northoaklandsports.com or results@northoaklandsports.com

SCHOOL: Auburn Hills Avondale

HEAD COACH: No information submitted

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 0-8, 0-7 OAA Blue Division.

LEAGUE FINISH: Eighth at both OAA-Blue league tournaments; eighth overall.

REGIONAL FINISH: Tied for 13th at D-2 Devils Ridge regional (no team score).

STATE FINISH: 13th at D-2 Devils Ridge regional.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Mackenzie Bloomberg, Courtney Morton, Erica Matero, Jillian Canacchi, Camille Hogan.

KEY LOSSES: Kelsey Wilson, Mary Maguire.

NOTABLES: Avondale struggled with low numbers last season and even competed with just two golfers at the regional. This season the scores have not been all that impressive, but the Yellowjackets are recording a team score and that alone could help this team in the standings in the league and at the regional; Avondale was 15th at the recent Oakland County D-II Tournament.

SCHOOL: Clarkston

HEAD COACH: Patti McMillen, second season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 2-4, 2-4 OAA Red Division.

LEAGUE FINISH: Sixth and fourth at two league meets; fifth in OAA Red Division final standings.

COUNTY FINISH: 11th at D-I County (381).

REGIONAL FINISH: Fifth at D-1 Prestwick Village regional (375).

STATE FINISH: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Anna Gray, soph.; Paige Olsen, soph.; Dana Olsen, soph. Jordan Stuart, jr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Taylor Hefty, fr.; Kelsey Runft, fr.

KEY LOSSES: Betty Pan (state qualifier; exchange student last season).

NOTABLES: Clarkston received a huge lift last season with an exchange student, who immediately dropped the Wolves’ team score during the final six weeks of the season; that player, Betty Pan, was a one-year wonder, making the state meet before returning overseas; this season Clarkston has competed with a young roster of many sophomores and freshmen.

SCHOOL: Holly

HEAD COACH: Matt Wilson

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 7-4, 4-4 Flint Metro League.

LEAGUE FINISH: Ninth place at FML league meet (462); sixth place in final FML standings.

COUNTY FINISH: D-II County.

REGIONAL FINISH: 10th at D-2 Devils Ridge regional (435).

STATE FINISH: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Alexandria Johnson, jr.; Emma Alexander, sr.; Lindsay Baslock, sr.; Taylor Turner, jr.; Jackie Miles, sr.; Alicia Homeszyn, sr.;

KEY NEWCOMERS: Stephanie Beaureguard, soph.; Landy Hill, soph. Jamie Watkins, soph.

KEY LOSSES: Amanda Moores.

NOTABLES: The level of play has picked up in the Flint Metro League in recent years and Holly is expected to be an improved squad with several upperclassmen and improved players throughout the lineup. Johnson is already one of the better golfers in program history and is capable of shooting in the 70s.

SCHOOL: Lake Orion

HEAD COACH: Monty Gallaher.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 1-7, 0-6 OAA Red Division.

LEAGUE FINISH: Seventh at OAA Red Division final standings last season.

COUNTY FINISH: 16th at D-I County (422).

REGIONAL FINISH: Ninth at D-1 Twin Lakes regional (426).

STATE FINISH: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Maddy McClean, sr.; Stacy Lecznar, sr.; Reiley Dunn, sr.; Paige Kevnick, sr.; Kayla Cesarek, soph.; Jasmine Alder, soph.; Rose Griffin, jr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Sam Fox, fr.; Tori Basso, fr.

KEY LOSSES: Abby Lennox.

NOTABLES: After winning the D-1 state crown in the spring 2007 season, the Dragons have struggled in recent years. With a quality freshman class and several returnees, this team should be able to see some mass improvement and perhaps even shoot in the 300s at tournaments this season. Last year Lake Orion normally shot in the low 400s as a team with only a couple golfers capable of breaking 100; team already finished second at Troy Invite and sixth at the first league meet; there are 17 players in the program, the most in several years.

SCHOOL: Ortonville Brandon

HEAD COACH: No information submitted.

LEAGUE FINISH: Eighth at FML league meet (452).

REGIONAL FINISH: 11th at D-2 Devils Ridge regional (471).

STATE FINISH: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Megan Pfarrer, Amanda Greco.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Kelsey Edwards.

KEY LOSSES: Ashley Edwards (all-league); Katie Massa, Angela Cardenas.

SCHOOL: Oxford

HEAD COACH: Terry Kelley, 13th season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 6-2, 5-2 OAA White Division.

LEAGUE FINISH: Third at both OAA-White league tournaments; finished third overall in final standings.

STATE FINISH: Did Not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Kyla Kurczewski, soph. (all-league); Hannah Beebe, sr.; Claire Wolanin, sr.; Riley Hayes, jr.; Emily Cleland, soph.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Lyndsey Hurford, soph.

NOTABLES: The Wildcats have had two top-five finishes at tournaments and a total of three top 10s so far this season and have played to a 5-0 start in duals, including league dual wins over Troy Athens and Birmingham Groves.

Second league meet 28th; Bald Mountain; five 5-0 in duals; 2-0 in league;

Down at county, yes, not graduation;

Beat Troy Athens, beat Birmingham Groves second on league tournament;

SCHOOL: Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

HEAD COACH: Marty Simmonds

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 4-4-0, 3-4 CHSL.

LEAGUE FINISH: Seventh at CHSL league meet.

COUNTY FINISH: Fourth at County D-II Tournament.

REGIONAL FINISH: Sixth at regional.

STATE FINISH: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Lexie Cipa, sr. (D-4 state qualifier; 45.5 average in 2010; 186 at D-4 finals); Natalie Stroster, jr.; Whitney Lorenz, sr.; Kelly McElreath, jr.; Maddie Fioroni, jr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Kailey Pawlich, jr.; Bailey Baringer, jr.; Cathy Robinson, sr.; Lizzie Ridge, jr.;  Raggio, soph.; Emily Daenzer, fr.

KEY LOSSES: Brooke Borowski (all-catholic); Jane fountain (last year’s No. 3 golfer).

NOTABLES: With 11 players on the roster, including six newcomers, the Irish hope to build into a contender come regional week and advance to the state finals as a team for the first time. Last season, Cipa became the first player in school history to make the cut for the state finals.

SCHOOL: Rochester

HEAD COACH: Jeff Haney

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 5-1, 5-1 OAA Red Division.

LEAGUE FINISH: Third at both league meets, third in OAA-Red final standings.

COUNTY FINISH: Fourth at D-I County (347).

REGIONAL FINISH: Second at D-1 Twin Lakes regional (337).

STATE FINISH: Eighth at D-1 state finals (352-350—702).

KEY RETURNEES: Amanda Graham, sr. (third-year varsity player); Hailey Bradley, jr.; Jazmin Haque, jr.; Natalie Graham, jr.; Abby Saber, jr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Alex Brinkman, soph.; Samantha Blair, sr.

KEY LOSSES: Rosalie Shyu, (four-time all-state; Michigan); Jyl Monahan (Lake Superior State); Taylor Clayton, Michaela Kastura.

KEY LOSSES: Rosalie Shyu (Michigan); Jyl Monahan (Lake Superior State).

NOTABLES: This will be a transitional year for the Falcons, who are going for their 14th straight state finals appearance; for the first time since the lat 1990s, there are no all-state caliber players on the roster and only tow of the top five return; there are five total returnees and seven players total, but the Falcons are likely a middle-of-the-pack team at most tournaments but could have enough to squeak out of the regional, where top-ranked Stoney Creek, state-ranked Utica and Port Huron Northern will also contend.

SCHOOL: Rochester Adams

HEAD COACH: Pete Driscoll, third season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 2-5, 2-4 OAA Red Division.

LEAGUE FINISH: fourth and fifth at league tournaments; fourth in finals league standings.

COUNTY FINISH: 10th at D-I County (379).

REGIONAL FINISH: Sixth at D-2 Devils Ridge regional (387).

STATE FINISH: Did not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Kaela Sakorafis (state qualifier; 98-87—185); Kate Cenko, Carly Densmore, Kristen Koltvedt, Natalie Lumsden

KEY NEWCOMERS: Briana Berger, Jane Smith.

NOTABLES: Adams was plagued by some inconsistency last season and appears to be fighting the same problem this season. The Highlanders coach, Pete Driscoll, also had surgery and will miss part of the season.

SCHOOL: Rochester Stoney Creek

HEAD COACH: Tony Lafferty, first season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 7-0, 6-0 OAA Red Division.

LEAGUE FINISH: Won both OAA-Red league meets, finished first overall.

COUNTY FINISH: First at D-I County (317).

REGIONAL FINISH: First at D-1 Twin Lakes regional (317).

STATE FINISH: Second at D-1 finals (335-325—660).

KEY RETURNEES: Gabby Yurik, sr. (three-time All-State Dream Team; third at state; county, regional champ); Chloe Guschewski, soph.; Abby McCain, jr.; Theresa Knapp, sr.; Anna Rode, sr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Bailey Compton, sr.

KEY LOSSES: Devon Compton (three-time All-State Dream Team; 2010 Miss Golf; Michigan; D-1 individual state champion); Marianna Stepp (Oakland).

NOTABLES: Stoney Creek is coming off its best season to date and is currently ranked No.1 in the state despite graduating to players to Division I colleges, Devon Compton and Marianna Stepp.

SCHOOL: Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest

HEAD COACH: Randy Tyler.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 2-5, 2-2 Thumb Independent League.

LEAGUE FINISH: Fourth at TIL league meet; fourth in final TIL standings.

COUNTY FINISH: Did not compete.

REGIONAL FINISH: 10th at D-4 regional.

STATE FINISH: Did Not qualify.

KEY RETURNEES: Kallie Washburn, sr. (all-league; fourth-year varsity); Gabby Bueno, sr.; Gabriella Gonzales, soph.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Two unproven golfers have joined the team.

NOTABLES: With only two teams in the MIAC with girls golf, Northwest competes in the ever-changing Thumb Independent League and is one of five schools in that conference this season; there are only five golfers on varsity this season.

SCHOOL: Troy

HEAD COACH: John Getzan, ninth season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 4-2, 4-2 OAA Red Division.

LEAGUE FINISH: Second at both league meet, second overall in OAA Red Division.

REGIONAL FINISH: Third at D-1 Twin Lakes regional (341).

STATE FINISH: Sixth at D-1 state finals (365-332—697).

KEY RETURNEES: Kelly Feng, sr. (all-state honorable mention); Christine Dolikian, sr. (all-league); Marisa Oleski, sr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Amanda McCafferty, soph.; Daphne Chang, fr.

NOTABLES: The Colts are coming off one of their best seasons to date and return a trio of fourth-year varsity players; Troy has already turned in four top-10 finishes at large meets this season and should be among the top teams at the upcoming county and regional meets.

SCHOOL: Troy Athens

HEAD COACH: Dan Cooper

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 6-4, 3-4 OAA White Division (fourth place).

LEAGUE FINISH: Fourth at both league meets, fourth overall.

COUNTY FINISH: 14th at D-II County Tournament.

REGIONAL FINISH: 10th at D-1 Twin Lakes regional (437).

STATE FINISH: Did not qualify

KEY RETURNEES: Jennifer Yang, soph. all-league; won this year’s D-II county crown with 73); Laura Demarco, sr.; Samantha Ruedisueli, jr.; Kirsten Paavola, sr.; Meg Richter, sr.; Mary Ann Black, sr.; LaRee Golke, sr.; Lauren Bilinski, sr.

KEY NEWCOMERS: None.

NOTABLES: After a few down years, Athens is one the way up as the top eight all return and the Red Hawks were fourth at the recent Oakland County D-II Tournament; Yang is a quality sophomore who should be a top-10 finisher in a variety of meets, while six seniors on the roster are hungry for major improvement.
