COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Oakland takes down Southern Utah in four sets
CEDAR CITY, Utah – Meghan Bray had 19 kills and 22 digs and Taylor Humm added 11kills and 21 digs as the Oakland volleyball team won in four sets over Southern Utah with scores of 25-22, 25-17, 28-30 and 25-21 Thursday night in Centrum Arena.
“This was a nice win on the road for our team,” said head coach Rob Beam. “Our passers were great tonight, despite the altitude, and that allowed our setters to do a great job balancing the attack. Also, our defense was very active against a good offensive team in Southern Utah.”
Oakland (8-6, 3-2) was solid in defense all night as three Golden Grizzlies had 20 or more digs in the match with Bray and Alli Kirk having 22 and Humm adding 21.
Jenna Lange and Allison Bell both had six blocks holding the Thunderbirds to a .134 hitting percentage for the match. Offensively, the Golden Grizzlies were led by Bray with 19 kills followed by Brittany Holbrook who had 15 kills and hit .389 for the match while Ashley Nevelle and Alissa Valentine combined for 49 assists on the night.
OU jumped out to an early lead, winning the first three points of the match and leading by as many as seven points in the first set to take the lead in the match 25-22. Oakland was in complete control of the second set as they had 16 kills in the set and held SUU to only a .044 hitting percentage for the 25-17 win.
Southern Utah (4-12, 2-4) won a tight third set that saw four lead changes after the teams tied 25-25. The Golden Grizzlies came back to win the fourth set punctuated by a Holbrook kill to win the match with the 25-21 set victory.
