FRIDAY’S FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Lathrup drowns Stoney Creek for first win of the season; Groves grinds up Avondale
ROCHESTER HILLS — Southfield Lathrup scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and hung on for the 14-7 OAA White Division football triumph over Rochester Stoney Creek.
Billy Moore scored on a 1-yard run and Collin Parks added a 15-yard sprint for the other score for the Chargers (1-5, 1-4). Jose Castro made both point-after-attempts for Lathrup, which captured its first win of the season.
Brandon Arduino scored on a 2-yard run and Alex Schnurr booted the extra point for Stoney Creek (1-5, 0-5), which dropped its fifth straight game after opening the season with a non-league win over Port Huron Northern.
BIRMINGHAM GROVES 56, AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 14: The host Falcons avenged a lopsided defeat by the hands of the Yellowjackets last season with this 42-point OAA Blue Division rout Friday in Birmingham.
Groves (5-1, 5-1) remained in the league title hunt by scoring 16 points in the first quarter and 14 more in the second quarter for a commanding 30-0 halftime advantage. In the second half, the Falcons exploded with a 19-7 run to put the game away.
Joe Mayone and Keon Collier both had two touchdowns for Groves. Collier scored on runs of 5 and 80 yards, while Mayone added sprints of 49 and 9 yards.
Mark Corliss added a 25-yard touchdown catch from Mayone, Matt Simpson added a 14-yar run, Casey Vordermark a 33-yard run, and Scot Feist a 20-yard run for Groves.
Collin added a pair of two-point conversion runs, Corliss had a conversion catch and Mayone had a pair of extra points in the win.
Mitch Robinson had a 38-yard run and Matt Smith caught a 45-yard scoring toss form Robinson late in the game for Avondale (4-2, 3-2). Kyle Sroka nailed both extra points for the Yellowjackets, who lost for the second time in three weeks.
HOLLY 34, FLINT KEARSLEY 14: The Bronchos captured their fourth straight win Friday on the road to move to 4-2 overall and 4-02 in the Flint Metro League with the win.
