Evans, Balough helps Oakland sweeps Summit League Athlete of the Week awards
ELMHURST, Ill. – Nick Evans and Vanessza Balogh were named The Summit League’s Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Week for their performances Oct. 7-17, marking the initial awards of the 2011-12 season announced by the league office.
Evans, a native of Rochester Hills, Mich, earns his second career Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week award and first of the season after four individual top-four finishes, including one event win and two league-best times.
To open the season, he won the 200 Free (1:58.26) and finished second in the 400 Free (4:17.03) at the Michigan State Outdoor Meet. He then went on to post league-bests in the 200 Free (1:41.94) and 500 Free (4:34.10) in a meet against Notre Dame, Michigan and TCU. Evans combined for seven top-three finishes in nine of the events he competed in to open the season.
Balogh, a native of Budapest, Hungary, captures her fourth career Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week honor and first of the season after five individual event wins.
She opened the season by winning the 800 Free (9:25.13), 400 Free (4:35.82) and 200 Free (2:10.73) at the Michigan State Outdoor Meet. Later, against Notre Dame and TCU, she took first in the 1,000 Free (10:10.92) and 500 Free (4:57.16). Her 500 Free time marks a league-best. Balogh posted first-place finishes in six of the seven events in which she competed.
The women’s team will be back in the pool on Saturday as they face Bowling Green and John Carroll at Fremont High School starting at 1 p.m. Both teams will be home on Oct. 29 against Wayne State where the 2010-11 men’s and women’s swimming and diving Summit League champions will be receiving their championships rings in a ceremony starting at 12:45 with the meet starting at 1 p.m.
