Big Reds erupt in second half to oust Brandon

PORT HURON — In its first-ever postseason win, Port Huron proved that it’s not how you start, but how you finish.

The Big Reds trailed visiting Ortonville Brandon 14-13 at the half Friday before catching fire in the second half for a 32-14 Division 2 district victory.

Port Huron, enjoying its best season in decades, will host Rochester Adams for the district championship next weekend. Adams stunned sixth-ranked Oxford 26-20 Friday night.

Winslow Chapman (1-yard run) and KJ Thomason (4-yard run) staked Port Huron to a 13-0 lead.

Blake Nivelt scored on runs of 1 and 3 yards for Brandon (5-5), which led 14-13 at the break. Shane Mahaffy set up the first scoring drive with a 43-yard bomb pass to Blake Everett.

Mahaffy was held to 110 passing yards for Brandon, most coming in the first half. The Blackhawks closed the season with three straight losses.

Winslow Chapman scored on a 3-yard run put Port Huron up for good in the third quarter at 20-14. Chapman added a 5-yard run and a 42-yard touchdown sprint for the other two scoring drives for Port Huron.

Winslow Chapman had 26 carries for 205 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Big Reds (9-1). Mark Chapman was 6-for-9 passing for 55 yards for Port Huron, which scored 19 unanswered points in the second half.
