ROCHESTER HILLS — Lake Orion may not have played its best volleyball game Saturday afternoon. It was good enough to win a district championship and earn a rematch with state powerhouse Birmingham Marian.

The seven-ranked Dragons swept Rochester in a Class A district girls volleyball championship for the second straight year, topping the Falcons 25-18, 25-21, 25-18, setting up a regional semifinal showdown between two of the state’s top 10 teams.

Lake Orion will host a Class A regional next Tuesday, with Southfield and Troy facing off at 5 p.m. in one semifinal with the regional host Dragons playing Marian in a rematch of last season’s regional finals at 7 p.m.

“I think the girls will be pumped. I think once they saw that we could see Marian in the regional, they have been looking forward to it. But at the same time, they didn’t look past anybody,” offered Lake Orion coach Bob Howey.

Lake Orion is 2-3-0 against third-ranked Marian, but each of those matches were in tournaments.

“We haven’t played them in a best-of-five match yet this season,” said Howey. “It should be interesting. I know the girls will be ready, and it’s on our own court. We are really looking forward to it.”

Liz Kalugar led Lake Orion with 10 kills and 13 digs against Rochester. Shannon Murdock added eight kills, 14 digs and four aces, Maddie Hutchinson had 14 digs and three aces and Dana Schrauben collected 17 assists and three aces for the Dragons, who moved to 50-12-1.

Rochester, which has five sophomores, finishes a rebuilding season with a 11-27-3 record.

“I don’t think we played particularly great again Rochester, but they got the job done,” said Howey. “I think once we got to 15 points in each game, we were able to distance ourselves. (Rochester) never really threatened us, but they played better against us (than they did in the regular season).”
