Notre Dame Prep advances to regional finals

ARMADA — One step further.

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep has advanced at least one step further than last season, as the Fighting Irish swept Madison Heights Lamphere, 3-0, Tuesday in a Class B girls volleyball regional semifinal at Armada High School.

Notre Dame Prep posted scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-7, overpowering the Rams in the third set, to set up a showdown with state powerhouse Marysville.

State-ranked Marysville defeated Notre Dame Prep in the regional semifinals last season. Marysville swept Harper Woods, 3-0, in Tuesday’s first semifinal to set up the showdown.

Dani McCormick led the Irish by going 23-for-24 attacking with 13 kills and four blocks while going 16-for-16 serving with 11 service points, including two aces.

Katherine Carlson finished 22-for-23 attacking with 10 kills, Hannah Strat was 13-for-13 serving with nine service points, two aces and 24 digs, and Tia Jurjiw was 99-for-100 setting with 45 assists.

The Irish (37-18-4)  will take on the Vikings ay 6 p.m. Thursday at Armada. It will mark the sixth time in eight seasons that Notre Dame Prep will face Marysville in the postseason.

Marysville ousted Notre Dame Prep in the state quarterfinals in 2005 and 2006. Notre Dame Prep defeated the Vikings in the regional finals in the fall of 2007 and 2008.
