Marysville ousts Notre Dame Prep in regional finals

ARMADA — Marysville knocked Pontiac Notre Dame Prep out of the postseason Thursday for the fifth time in nine seasons.

The Vikings posted a 3-0 victory over the Fighting Irish in a Class B girls volleyball regional final at Armada High School. Marysville posted wins of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-22.

Notre Dame Prep (36-19-4) held the lead in all three games but could not hold on to claim the upset. Marysville (48-9-4) captured its third consecutive regional title and 21st in the past 23 seasons — one of the best streaks in the state in the past 25 years. The Vikings will play Frankenmuth in the state quarterfinals next Tuesday.

Haylee Booms led Marysville 22 kills, 14 digs and four aces.

Sophomore middle hitter Dani McCormick went 22-of-29 attacking with 11 kills and was also 10-for-10 serving for three service points and two aces to pace Notre Dame Prep. Tia Jurkiw was 71-for-74 setting with 26 assists and 9-for-9 serving, while defensive Diana Sciacca was 17-for-18 serving with 10 points for the Irish.
