HOUSTON – After opening the season with a pair of losses, Oakland University’s rebuilding season just added another building block Tuesday night.

The Golden Grizzlies posted their second straight road win — all of the first four games have been on the road — and the latest ended with a 76-74 non-conference men’s basketball victory over Houston at the Hofheinz Pavilion.

Reggie Hamilton and Corey Petros each scored 16 points to lead a charge of four Oakland players in double figures.

OU had 22 assists on 26 field goals and out-rebounded the Cougars, 37-35.

“We won tonight and didn’t shoot the ball very well,” said Oakland coach Greg Kampe. “We won because of our defense and rebounding.”

Drew Valentine and Laval Lucas-Perry as they both scored 15 points. Petros, one of the two first-year players in the Grizzlies’ frontcourt, grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, while Travis Bader dished out a career-high six assists.

Kirk Van Slyke scored a game-high 28 points off the bench for Houston, while. Reigning Conference USA Player of the Week, Alandise Harris, finished with 21 points, 15 of those coming in the second half for the Cougars (3-1), who suffered their first loss of the season.

The Golden Grizzlies and Cougars played an up-and-down game as Houston jumped out in front 15-6 in the first seven minutes. OU (2-2) responded with a run of its own, outscoring the Cougars 28-12 over the next nine minutes and led by just four at the half, 43-39.

OU led for most of the second half, but Houston took its only lead with 12:33 left in the game, 55-53. The Golden Grizzlies quickly regained the lead on back-to-back baskets by the 6-foot-10 Petros. With the Golden Grizzlies up one, 65-64, and 2:30 left on the clock, Bader drilled a 3-pointer after Lucas-Perry grabbed a big offensive rebound as the lead grew to four points, 68-64.

The Grizzlies then went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line over the final 32 seconds to hold on for the two-point victory. OU finished the game 18-for-21 (86 percent) from the charity stripe.
