Eastern Michigan overpowers Rochester College
YPSILANTI — The difference between an NCAA Division I school and an NAIA program was again noticeable on Wednesday night. Eastern Michigan entertained Rochester College and the Eagles soared to a 62-43 triumph over the Warriors, who hold a dual membership in the NAIA and USCAA. The win at the Convocation Center was a tune-up for EMU’s home game Sunday with Michigan State.
Four Eagles reached double figures, led by sophomore guard J.R. Sims’ 12 points. Senior guards Darrell Lampley and Antonio Green chipped in with 11 points apiece and Matt Balkema twined 10 points with nine rebounds for EMU (4-1), which held a 39-31 edge on the boards. . The Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team tuned up for a Sunday, Nov. 27 home game against the Michigan State University Spartans by taking care of a visiting Rochester College team, 62-43, here Wednesday evening, Nov. 23, in a non-conference game in the Convocation Center. Rochester College slipped to 9-3 on the year, with two of its losses against Division I colleges, part of a five-game tour against Division I schools. Ricky Doran reached a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, both which were game highs. Dramell Hogan followed with 10 points and 10 boards for the Warriors. Stephan Henning was held to five points and four assists and turned the ball over six times. Rochester College held the Eagles to just 36.8 percent shooting (21-for-57), but the Warriors were just as cold, canning just 38.3 percent of their attempts (18-for-47) with 10 fewer attempts. RC was forced into 21 turnovers by the Eagles’ sting defense. Eastern opened with a 16-2 over the first 10 minutes of the game before to take command. Rochester College closed to within 18-15 late in the first half but could get no closer. EMU extended that lead to 26-15 at the half, thanks to an 8-0 run to close the first half. A13-8 run to open the second half helped the Eagles up the advantage to 39-23.
