TUESDAY’S GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Defending champion Lakers down Bendle; Rochester Hills, Lake Orion open with wins

WATERFORD After winning back-to-back state titles, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes opened up its quest for a third crown Tuesday by doing what it does best: Getting a lead on teams and slowly wearing them down.

Burton Bendle was the latest victim in the season opener for both teams.

The Lakers opened with an 18-10 run and cruised to a 55-45 victory over Bendle.

WOLL led 29-17 at the half and 45-29 through three quarters of play before Bendle closed the game with a 16-10 spurt to make the final a 10-point margin.

Carlee Cottrel led a balanced effort for Lakes (1-0) with 17 points. Anna Robb added 12 points, Ava Doetsch scored 10 and Lexie Robak scored nine for the Lakers. Cottrell and Doetsch chipped in with eight rebounds apiece.

Emily Mallan and Jacqueline Simpson led Bendle (0-1) with 16 points apiece. Allison Bednarski added 13 points.

ROCHESTER HILLS CHRISTIAN 65,
MIDLAND CALVARY BAPTIST 51: After losing eight players to graduation from in MACS state semifinals team, the Eagles opened up the 2011-12 campaign with this 14-point non-league win.

Senior guard Allise Dubay had 22 points and five assists to pace RHC (1-0). Freshman Jenna Porter chipped 15 points and eight rebounds while Ashley Parker had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Rochester Hills Christian.

LAKE ORION 45, LINDEN 29: A 27-15 lead at the half helped Lake Orion open the season with this lopsided non-league victory. The Dragons led 37-21 through three quarters and never allowed the Eagles to pose a threat. Laura Turnbull scored 14 and Marisa Secondtine added 13 points for Lake Orion (1-0). Jordan Sargent scored seven for Linden (0-1).

CLARKSTON 47, DAVISON 32: Clarkston reached the Sweet 16 in Class A last season before bowing out against Midland. The Wolves returned the win circle Tuesday with this non-league win over the Cardinals. Tori Trimmer scored 14 points and Delaney Kenny added 10 points for Clarkston (1-0).

ROCHESTER HILLS LUTHERAN NORTHWEST 46, WESTLAND LUTHERAN 38: The Crusaders were road Wriors Tueday and came home with this eight-point MIAC win. Kim Lepor had 17 points, nine assists and five steals to lead Northwest (1-0) and Kallie Washburn added 13 points. Aldreana Fikes scored 14 points for Westland Lutheran (0-1).

ROCHESTER ADAMS 39, SOUTHFIELD 21: Adams outscored Southfield in three of the four quarter to post this OAA crossover win Tuesday. The Highlanders led 21-10 at the half and 32-14 through three quarters of play. Lexi Lewandowski scored eight points and Lauren Boyle and Raiven Owusu added six points apiece for Adams. Four players had four pints apiece for Southfield (0-1).

HOLLY 38, MILFORD 33: Holly outscored Milford in the first three quarters and held on for this five-point non-league triumph. Holly led 17-12 at the half and 27-21 after three quarters.  Allyssa Coopley scored 12 and Lauren Maher added 11 points for Holly.  Claire Slaughter scored 13 for Milford, which shot just 11-for-24 from the foul line and could not close the gap in the end.
