Third-period nightmares: Rochester United falters down stretch in losses to Midland, Lake Orion

ROCHESTER Third period collapses this weekend at the Onyx cost Rochester United a pair of hockey games.

Midland skated to a 7-3 non-league win, while Lake Orion iced United, 6-1. In both games, United had monumental defensive collapses.

Midland showcased the reasons why they are ranked fourth in Division 2 with a four-goal outburst in the third period, all coming during a three-minute span in the third period starting at the 12-minute mark. Midland turned a close one-goal lead into an overwhelming 6-2 margin with scoring from Stephen Trombley, Thomas Smith, and Jason Regier, who converted his goal of the night.

The Chemics’ Nick Mammel also scored at 5:38 of the third for his second goal of the night to increase the lead to 7-2.  Three minutes later, United’s Marshall Bowery scored his second of the night from Anthony Facca and Brent Boudreau for the 7-3 outcome.

Rochester United opened the scoring at the 11-second mark, with Bowery scoring an unassisted goal. Rochester scored again at the three-minute mark in the first period on the power play with Anthony Facca (two-point night) scoring off feeds from Bowery (three points) and Boudreau (two points).

Rochester could not hold onto the two-goal lead.

The Chemics finally tallied late first period goal by Nick Mammel from Conner Hart.

The second period belonged to Midland, as the Chemics outshot Rochester 15-10 in the frame. Goals from Jason Regier and Ryan Singer gave Midland the 3-2 advantage heading into the third period.

LAKE ORION 6, ROCHESTER UNITED 1: Lake Orion skated to this lopsided win Saturday night in OAA Red Division play.

The Dragons, ranked sixth in Division 1, exploded for four goals in the third period to break open a tight 2-1 game and turn it into a five-goal rout.

Leading 2-1 going into the third, the Dragons scored on two early power play goals from Justin Mckelvey and Joseph Bono to go up by three goals with 10 minutes to play.  The momentum shift was too much for United – Lake Orion continued to pour it on with late scores by Nicholas Balavich and Kurt Latshaw.

The first two periods were not nearly as one-sided . United came out with a lot of speed early and were more than a match for the visiting Dragons through the first thirty-five minutes of the game.

Lake Orion opened the scoring with three minutes left in the first period on a power play goal by Joseph Bono (two-goal night) from David Otto and Jordan Stross. Thirty seconds later on another power play, the Dragons’ Ryan Szydlowski scored from Nicholas Balavich (two-point night) and Shane Stockwell.

In the second period United scored its loan goal by Evan Asuncion from Dylan Oppenheiser, which cut the deficit to 2-1 entering the third frame.
