CLARKSTON — Time and time again, it has been said in the arena of sports, offense sells tickets but defense wins championships.

Clarkston will take the latter if it has to choose.

The Wolves finished second to Southfield Lathrup in the OAA Red Division girls basketball standings last winter, but showcased their defensive prowess to bite the Chargers, 37-33, Friday, to take the lead in division.

Clarkston is 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the division heading into the holiday break.

Lathrup’s Michelle Hayes hit a three-pointer with four minutes to play to tie the game at 30-30, but Clarkston responded with a 7-3 run to close the game and keep the Chargers at bay.

Clarkston’s Delaney Kenny and Lathrup’s Kendall Terry both hit triples to leave the score at 33-33. The Chargers could not solve the Wolves’ defense after that point.

Clarkston led 24-19 at the half.

Kenny scored 14 points to pace Clarkston.

Hayes scored a game-high 21 points for Lathrup (4-1, 2-1).
