MORE HOCKEY COVERAGE: http://northoaklandsports.com/?s=Hockey

2011 ALL-AREA TEAM:  http://northoaklandsports.com/2011/04/05/2011-all-area-boys-hockey-state-semifinalist-lake-orion-leads-talented-cast-on-the-ice/

SCHOOL: Auburn Hills Avondale

HEAD COACH: Karl Diaiek, second season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 5-19-1, 4-8-0

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 3 pre-regional to state powerhouse Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood (8-0).

KEY RETURNEES: Blake Blomberg, sr. F; Joe Spurlin, sr. F; Kris Stein, sr. D; Connor Traskal, sr. F; Ian Raber, jr. D; Steven Carter, sr. F; Alex Poston, sr. F; Justin Przytakoski, sr. F.

TOP NEWCOMERS: Matt Andrus, sr. F; Jordan Edwards, jr. D; Paul Miriani, soph. D; Patrick Riedy, soph. F; Luke Senkowski, jr. F; Nikolas Senkowski, fr. G.

KEY LOSSES: Jon Fritts, F; Brian Portelli, F; Derek Piercy, D; Sal Munuco, D; Andy Stein, F; Andrew Ozerities, F.

NOTABLES: Avondale was inconsistent the past two years and was unpredictable of its compete level on the ice; this season Daiek is in his second campaign and hope to mold a team that is much more consistent and competitive each night out.

SCHOOL: Clarkston

HEAD COACH: Bryan Krygier, 12th season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 16-10-3, 7-2-1 OAA Red Division (second).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Won Division 1 regional title with wins over Grand Blanc (5-3), Flint Kearsley (8-0) and Bay City Unified (5-1); lost in D-1 state quarterfinals to eventual state champion Novi (9-1).

KEY RETURNEES: Adam Larkin, jr. D (All-Area Second Team); Adam Johns, jr. D; Adam Bruderick, sr. F;  Jack Viazanko, soph. G; Mat Harrington, sr. D; Adam Seel, sr. F; Jordan Henley, sr. F.

TOP NEWCOMERS: Kyle Lamberti, sr. G; Shawn Coter, soph. D; Joe Pop, fr. D; Eric Matynowski, soph. D; Garrett Polish, soph. F; Chase Widemann, soph. F; Carter Rea, soph. F; Zach Gootee, jr. F; Nate Lowell, jr. F; Josh Sowers, sr. F; Gabe Comos, sr. F; Jacob LaPorte, soph. F.

KEY LOSSES: Brad Pizzey, sr. F (All-Area First Team; now playing travel hockey); Dillon Drayer, sr. F (All-Area Second Team); Austin Morse, F (All-Area Third Team) ; Chad Wotton, D; Macario Torres, F; Conor Hughes, F; Adam Matynowski, D;

NOTABLES: Clarkston made another long run in the postseason, and the all-time most successful program in North Oakland County reached the quarterfinals before running into a buzz saw in eventual champion Novi. The Wolves had a slow start in November and early December before getting untracked with a series of wins. This team graduated or lost some key personal to travel hockey which could be attributed to the slow start. But like all Krygier-coached teams, this will likely be a unit that opposing schools do not want to draw in the postseason. The Wolves do have a bright spot as Viazanko is a star on the rise between the pipes, already turning in some stellar games last season.

SCHOOL: Lake Orion

HEAD COACH: Nick Field, first season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 20-8-1, 7-3-1 OAA Red Division (third).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Won Division 1 regional title with wins over Utica Eisenhower (10-2), Rochester United (4-1) and Macomb Dakota (2-0); defeated St. Clair Shores Unified (4-3) in the state quarterfinals; lost to Novi in state semifinals (3-0).

KEY RETURNEES: Nick Balavich, sr. F; Shane Stockwell, sr. C; Brad Bogus, sr. F; Dylan Rosen, sr. D; Eliott Rinke, sr. D.

OTHER RETURNEES: Andrew Vanek, sr. F;  Tony Johnson, sr. F; Daniel Chapie, sr. F; Justin McKelvey, sr. F.

TOP NEWCOMERS: Ryan Szydlowski, fr. F; David Otto, jr. D; Trevor Knight, sr. C; Joe Bono, sr. F; Jordan Stross, soph. D; Mark Nylen, jr. D; Drew Galasso, sr  G; Logan Aldrich, soph. G.

KEY LOSSES: Danny Blascak, F (All-Area First Team); Jake Kreutzer, D (All-Area Third Team); Corbin Rainey, F (All-Area First Team); Jesse Cameron, D (All-Area First Team); Dominic Juncaj, G; Shawn Horton, G; Brett Reed, D (All-Area Second Team); Daniel Chapie, F; Zac Koonce, F (All-Area Third Team).

NOTABLES: Lake Orion has come a long ways since launching its hockey program in 1999-2000. Last season with a team of mostly seniors and juniors, the Dragons put it all together to gain a school record 20 wins, capture its first-ever regional championship and advance to the Division 1 Final Four for the first time. There is over half of that team back and several key players as the Dragons hope to maintain their top-10 status and put the pieces together for a other lengthy tournament run: Field is technically the third head coach in three years and fifth overall in program history, but was the junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant last season, so there has been no drastic change.

SCHOOL: Ortonville Brandon-Holly-Flint Kearsley Unified

HEAD COACH: Bill O’Bryan,

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 5-14-1, 5-7 Flint Metro League (fifth).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Brandon defeated Goodrich (4-2) in its Division 2 pre-regional contest but lost to Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood (8-0) in our regional; Kearsley lost in D-1 regional semifinals to Clarkston (8-0).

KEY RETURNEES: Jordan Orth, sr. C; Brandon Csutoras, sr. F; Bret Loviska, sr. F; James Gleason, sr. D; Mitch Hollingshead, sr.  D; Brett Smiles, jr. D.

OTHER RETURNEES: Jon Riley, sr. F;Cam Fox, sr. F; Matt Gagnon, sr. F;Kody Eddy, sr. F; JT Kirby, jr. F; Kyle Nishek, jr. F; Trever Hunter, jr. F; Patrick Corey, jr. D; Tyler Battles, soph. D; Nick Tyburski, soph. F; AJ Yuchasz, soph. F; Brandon Orth, soph. D;

TOP NEWCOMERS: Steven Niles, fr. D; Tyler Russell, fr. F; Evan Flood, fr. F; Austin Kirby, sr G; Tristen Younes, fr. G.

KEY LOSSES: Evan Yuchasz, D; Joel Huber, C; Tyler Lynch, G (playing travel hockey); Nic Sowa, G.

NOTABLES: This is an unusual pairing with Flint Kearsley and Ortonville Brandon merging into one team, with the program also picking up players from Holly, which never had a hockey team in the past. Many of the programs in the Flint Metro League are now unified, with Swartz Creek and Clio joining forces, Lapeer East and West merging and Linden creating a cooperative unit with Durand and Lake Fenton. The OBFKHO unified team will play home games at the Perani Arena in Flint.

SCHOOL: Oxford

HEAD COACH: Dave Hague, ninth season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 13-8-3, 9-1-2 OAA White Division (first).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost to Milford (3-2) in Division 2 pre-regional.

KEY RETURNEES: Nick Hocker, sr. F; Nolan Chapman, sr. F (All-Area Second Team) ; Dean Couwlier, sr. D (All-Area First Team); Kevin Dutzy, jr. D; Montana Sampson, jr.  D; Brennen Orr, jr. D; Chad Wicker, sr. D; Garrett Kovacic, sr.  F; Anthony Boreo, sr. F; Joey Bonino, jr. D; Cody Wright, soph. F; Alex Schlueter, soph. D; Connor Novack, jr. F; Jon Buday, jr. F; Stephan Fritz, jr.. F; Austin Kurkowski, jr. F.

TOP NEWCOMERS: Luke Novack, soph.; Steven Fowler, fr.; Scott Stubenrauch, fr.; Brandon Welch, fr.

KEY LOSSES: Tim Perk, F; Matt Reid, D; Oscar Alexanderson, G.

NOTABLES: Oxford moved from the Flint Metro League to the OAA White Division last season and captured its first league title since the program was launched in 1999-2000; the Wildcats were second in the FML two years ago. Now this program has reached the OAA Red Division and is off to a flying start entering the holidays. Could this be the year Oxford makes some head ways in the postseason?

SCHOOL: Rochester United

HEAD COACH: Craig Staskowski, first season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 11-12-0, 5-5-0 OAA Red Division (fifth).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost to Lake Orion in Division 1 regional semifinals (4-1).

KEY LOSSES: Ian Mercer, G (holds several goaltending record for RU); Michael Potoniec, F; Dan Ryan, D (All-Area Third Team); Gannon Pacioni, D.

NOTABLES: Unified, which does not have an official nickname, has graduated large amounts of players the past two years, leaving first-year head coach Craig Staskowski with many question marks this season and who might answer them. This is almost entirely a new roster from two years ago with several first-year players.

SCHOOL: Rochester Stoney Creek

HEAD COACH: Ian Smith, first season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 12-14-0, 4-7-0 OAA Red Division (Seventh).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Defeated Utica (8-0) and Macomb L’Anse Creuse North (8-0), but lost in Division 2 regional finals to state-ranked Port Huron Northern (2-1).

KEY RETURNEES: Jeff Simon, sr. D; Drew Stanbury, sr. D; Mitch Harvey, sr. F; Cameron O’Shea, sr. F; Brian Gill, sr. F; Zach Woodruff, sr.  F; Matt Zuelch, sr. F (Al-Area Third Team); Dom Zelch, sr. F; Mass Grant, jr. G.

TOP NEWCOMERS: Taylor Zuke, sr. D; Mitch Franklin., sr. F; Nolan Arbour, soph. F; Chris Stanbury, jr. F.

KEY LOSSES: Adam Ketner, D (All-Area Third Team); Joe Costello, soph. F (playing travel hockey); Jake Landuyt, G (All-Area Third Team); Jake Markaity, F.

NOTABLES: Stoney Creek has a new coach, but hopes to follow similar seasons where the Cougars started slow but finished strong. In four of the last five seasons since splitting off from Rochester United, Stoney Creek has reached the regional finals in Division 2, including the state quarterfinals in 2010.

SCHOOL: Pontiac Notre Dame Prep

HEAD COACH: Bob Rosbury.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD:

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost in Division 3 regional semifinals to Bloomfield Hils Cranbrook Kingswood (8-0).

NOTABLES: The ifhgtin Irish are slated for a rebuilding campaign with mostly a new roster. The team’s 0-6-0 start just before the Christmas break proves that this could be a long season for NDP. If its younger players can toughen it out, they could lay foundations for the future and for a program that has won two regional championships in the past decade.

SCHOOL: Troy

HEAD COACH: Tim Zimmerman, sixth season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 2-18-2, 1-11-0 OAA White Division (seventh).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Lost to Troy Athens in Division 1 pre-regional (1-0, double overtime).

KEY RETURNEES: Brett St. Cyr, sr. F; Nick Kondolean, sr. F; Alex  Franchi, sr. D; Colin McLean, jr. D; Edmund Qiao, jr.  F;; Stan Urban, sr. F; Conor Victor, soph. D; Joel Brodzinski, jr. D; Anthony Wilson, jr. D; Andrew Urban, soph. D; Chris Reynolds, sr. D; Dimintri Balcoff, sr. F; Beau Berger, jr. F; Harrison Stoolmiller, soph. F.

KEY LOSSES: Cody Victor, F; Michael Londeck, D; Chris Resseguie, G; Steven Kish, G; Blake Bogdanovich, F; Mac Burns, sr. F; Trevor Walker, F.

NOTABLES: Troy suffered through a major rebuilding campaign last winter with a young squad. One of the Colts’ problems was goal scoring, a remedy that some newcomers hope to fill this season. Troy was once a proud program, having reached the Final Four in 2001. An improved roster likely won’t bring Troy back to that level, but a climb in the OAA-White standings and several more wins would indicate some major improvement.

SCHOOL: Troy Athens

HEAD COACH: Joe Barone, fifth season.

LAST SEASON’S RECORD: 3-22-1, 1-9-0 OAA Red Division (seventh).

STATE TOURNAMENT: Beat Troy (1-0) in pre-regional; lost on Division 1 regional semifinals to Birmingham United (6-2).

KEY RETURNEES: Nathan Gurzell, jr. F; Matt Perkins, sr. F; James Braniff, sr. D;
Cory Faw, jr. D; Ian Marchand, jr. F.

OTHER RETURNEES: Dylan Kotora, soph. F; Kosta Karabetsos, soph; F; Dylan Tramel, sr. D; Joe Valdez, jr. D; Tony Gaioni, jr. F.

TOP NEWCOMERS: Jeff Merola, soph. G.

KEY LOSSES: Justin Yochem, G; Jamie Cattran, G. Dan Kreza, F; Tyler Everlove, D.

NOTABLES: The Red Hawks had almost an entirely new team last year with just four players with any type of varsity experience heading into the 2010-1 campaign, including both goaltenders.  This season the Red Hawks have already been much more competitive and are playing in the OAA White Division after two years in the OAA-Red.
