It was another banner year for area football teams and players in 2011.

The list of accomplishments was long and so is the recruiting list, as many athletes from the www.northoaklandsports.com coverage region are being sought after by colleges of all sizes.

There were nine area schools that made the postseason in 2011 – Auburn Hills Avondale, Clarkston, Holly, Lake Orion, Ortonville Brandon, Oxford, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, Rochester Adams and Troy Athens and while no area teams won regional championships or advance to the Final Four or state finals at Ford Field, it was still quite a year to remember.

Holly ended a league championship drought that lasted nearly six full decades. Notre Dame Prep overcame a losing record last season to win a CHSL title. Clarkston rallied back from forfeits due to the use of ineligible non-starter the first two weeks of the season to still gain a share of the OAA Red Division title. Lastly, Lake Orion also captured a share of the OAA-Red crown after graduating 18 starters from its 2010 state championship squad.

Furthermore, Rochester Adams made the postseason cut a 15th straight time, an area record, while Oxford turned the tables with a rare losing record in 2010 to making the playoffs this year.

Ortonville Brandon overcame the disappointments of 2010 of gaining an at-large berth this season, while Avondale was the last Class A school to gain an at-large berth this season. Troy Athens recorded its first winning season since 2004 to reach the postseason for the first time in seven years.

The area also produced multiple all-staters in various publications and even the Mr. Football award winner. Dozens of other athletes also earned all-league honors and even a few earned All-County status.

They are all found here on the 2011 All-North Oakland County Football Team, which expanded this school year to include Holly, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep and Ortonville Brandon high schools.

For leading their respective schools to success stories, Holly’s Ryan Culloty and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep’s Kyle Zimmerman share the Coach of the Year honor.

The first-team profiles for both offense and defense, which included 14 players each, are found below:

Oxford'sPresoctt Line had a phenomenal season which saw him earn the Mr. Football award.

FIRST TEAM-OFFENSE

Quarterbacks:

MITCH BAENZIGER, Clarkston: After an injury sidelined Baenziger for most of his junior season, this talent came back as a senior and led the Wolves to a share of the OAA Red Division crown and a berth in the district finals. Baenziger finished 103-for-168 passing for 1,833 yards, 22 touchdowns and only five interceptions. He also ran for 443 yards on 66 attempts and seven more scores.

Mitch had a fantastic season for a player who was hurt most of his junior season. He came back strong this year and led us to a league title,” said Kurt Richardson. “He has a strong, accurate arm and he’s a great leader.”

MITCH ROBINSON, Auburn Hills Avondale: A three-year starter at quarterback, a two-year starter as a defensive end and a three-year punter, Robinson exits the Avondale football program with multiple postseason honors and plenty of college interest. He is a two-time All-OAA Blue Division honoree who owns several school records for single-game, season and career.

“He’s one of the best we’ve had here,” said coach Steve Deutsch. “He set all of those records as a junior and this year we asked him to be more of a run quarterback and he did that. People don’t realize that he was also our best defensive player and one of our leading tacklers. Plus he was our punter. He’s just a great athlete, a great leader. We’ll miss having him next year. It’s hard to replace a kid like Mitch Robinson.”

Running Backs:

JOEY GOSS, Clarkston: Goss more than improved from his junior to senior year, he emerged as one of the area’s most dangerous backs with over 1,800 all-purpose yards. This season Goss chalked up 944 rushing yards on 165 attempts and scored 15 rushing touchdowns. Goss also displayed some sure hands with 25 catches for 461 yards and four receiving touchdowns and returned 13 kickoffs for 403 more yards and one touchdown. Division I schools Dayton and Butler are interested, along with multiple Division II GLIAC schools.

“Joey had a great year running the football for us. He really improved since his junior season, said Richardson. “He could run and catch the football and was great on returning kicks.”

PRESCOTT LINE, Oxford: Named Mr. Football for 2011, the 6-1, 215-pound Southern Methodist recruit earned every postseason honor in-state and is up for All-America honors as well thanks to his record-breaking season. A team state champion and an individual state champion at 215 pounds in wrestling, Line had as good of a football season any player in this area in many years. Also named the Associated Press Division 1-2 State Player of the Year along with first-team status at a variety of levels, Line rushed for 2,454 yards and 38 touchdowns on 364 carries. Defensively, he also chalked up an impressive 159 tackles, had two interceptions and returned one for a touchdown as a linebacker.

“We’ve had a lot of great players here and he’s right there with the best of them. He might be the best,” said Oxford coach Bud Rowley. “He had an incredible year.”

Wide Receivers-Tight Ends:

AUSTIN HOPKIN, Holly: With Holly enjoying one of its best season in school history, which included the Bronchos’ first league championship in 59 years, Hopkin was a standout wide receiver, punter and defensive back. He set the school record with seven catches in one game, had 34 catches for 673 yards and four touchdown catches, averaged a school record 38 yards a punt with a long of 58 yards, and recorded eight career interceptions as a three-year varsity veteran. He also recorded 49 tackles with four interceptions and 11 pass break-ups this season. He earned Associated Press All-State Division 1-2 honors among numerous postseason honors. Hopkin is being courted by multiple Division II schools.

“Austin’s size and athletic ability make him a difficult cover for any defense,” said coach Ryan Culloty. “Austin has made a number of key catches in critical situations for our offense in 2011 contributing to our team’s success Austin’s work ethic, leadership and maturity are prime examples of why Holly has achieved great success this season.”

TROY SASSACK, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep: The Fighting Irish’s No. 1 target in the air, the 6-4, 195-pound Sassack was busy racking up numbers during Notre Dame Prep’s 10-1 season. He had 35 catches for 620 yards and 10 touchdown receptions offensively. On the defensive side of the ball, he had four interceptions, returned two picks for touchdowns and supplied 18 tackles in the secondary.

Offensive Linemen:

ANDREW AURAND, Troy Athens: The Red Hawks did not have any problems running the football on the left side behind this tackle, who earned All-OAA Red Division, All-County First Team, All-Metro North and All-State Honorable Mention honors. At 6-4 and 295 pounds, this three-year starter is picking up plenty of interest from Division I and Division II programs thanks to his power and ability to create holes. Aurand earned All-Area honors for the third straight season.

“He has tremendously quick feet and hands,” said coach Josh Heppner. “Andrew has found himself as a top recruit for many Division I and II schools. He is not only extremely powerful, but tremendously smart in the classroom and on the football field.”

MIKE FISHER, Rochester Adams: The linebacker and offensive guard was an anchor on both sides of the football for the Highlanders. He recovered three fumbles a made 75 tackles on defense and was a key cog in Adams’ offensive schemes. He made All-OAA White Division honors this season.

“He’s a great blocker and was the best offensive lineman we had,” said coach Tony Patritto. He’s a great leader and two-way starter. Mike was a very physical and instinctive player.”

COLLIN GOETZ, Oxford: At a towering 6-7 and 255 pounds, Goetz was plagued by injuries during his junior football and basketball seasons but bounced back to become a state qualifier in the shot put last spring and that success more than carried over into football. Committed to Central Michigan for football, Goetz was pile mover and space eater on the line, leaving a path for the aforementioned Line to chalk up multiple school records. The Wildcats recorded over 3,000 yards of offense this season and Goetz was a key factor in the ability to move the football. Defensively, Goetz had 45 tackles and six sacks.

“He really came on strong this season. He had a great season,” said Rowley. “I think he’s going to (develop) into a fine player in college.”

NICK GADJZIK, Rochester Stoney Creek: Although the Cougars suffered through another down season, the 6-3, 215-pound Gadjzik was still a force from his center and defensive end positions. The All-OAA White Division honoree, who was a state runner-up wrestler last winter in the Division 1, 215-pound weight class, carries a 4.1 GPA, is an Academic All-State honoree, class valedictorian and is being courted by Ivy League schools for football and wrestling. He also earned his team’s Iron Man Award honor selected by his teammates for almost never coming off the field.

“Nick is an awesome young man that is a great leader of his peers,” said coach Calvin Gross. “Nick was an outstanding lineman for our team over the last three seasons. He has great feet and good technique. He’s one of our best lineman over the last 10 seasons.”

LUCAS SANDERS, Clarkston: Standing at a beefy 6-2 and 300 pounds on the line, Clarkston was simply able to move the football with ease against certain opponents thanks to his interior line play. Sanders earned All-OAA Red Division and All-County Honorable Mention honors this season.

“Lucas was our offensive lineman of the year,” said Richardson. “He could really move people around. We averaged around 30 points a game and Lucas did his part. He’s very athletic for someone his size.”

At-Large:

SEAN CHARETTE, Lake Orion: A four-year starter who missed 2.5 games as a junior due to injury, Charette came back and a fine senior season which saw him finish with several career records coming out of a long legacy of standout quarterbacks at Lake Orion. This season, Charette led his team through a rebuilding year that still featured a share of the OAA Red Division title and a berth in the postseason. He finished 113-for-202 passing, good for a .506 percentage, with 1,724 yards, 17 passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. He is the all-time leader in school history for passing yards (5,476) and touchdown passes (65).

JOHNNY WILLIAMS, Holly: The MVP of the Flint Metro League, Williams played quarterback and defensive back for the Bronchos as both a sophomore and junior. He scored 98 total points this season and rushed for more than a 1,100 yards and passed for more than 1,000 yards this season.

“Johnny is the central component to our offense who has grown into a true dual threat QB,” said Culloty. “He’s an outstanding competitor and hard-working young man who has won the respect of his teammates and those he competes against. He demonstrated tremendous leadership and character.”

Kicker:

ALEX BARTA, Clarkston: A two-year starter, Barta earned All-OAA Red Division and All-county Honorable Mention honors after he displayed consistency with accuracy and range for the league champion Wolves. This season Barta was 41-for-44 on extra points, 3-for-5 on field goals, punted 33 yards on average and was precise on pinning teams deep into their own territory or drilling kickoffs into the end zone. The Naval Academy and Michigan Tech are two of his most serious pursuers.

“He gave us great position on his kicks and punts and was just really consistent,” said Richardson. “We’ve had a lot of very good kickers come through here and Alex is a good one. I think whoever (signs) him in college is going to get a great kid.”

FIRST TEAM-DEFENSE

Ends:

ANDREW SHAFKALIS, Lake Orion: Standing at a powerful 6-2, 210 pounds, Shafkalis was a nightmare for opposing teams because of his power and speed and ability to gain quick ground and throw down players with force. The team captain and two-year starter after transferring over from Rochester, Shafkalis finished with 60 tackles, nine sacks and 15 tackles for loss.

ALLEN STRODE, Holly: Strode displayed explosiveness off the line to record some impressive defensive numbers in his career as a two-year starter. The senior had 12.5 sacks in 2011 and 22.5 sacks in his career, a new school record. He also recorded 67 tackles for loss in that span and 86 tackles this season over 10 games.

“Allen Strode typifies what hard work and determination are all about,” said Culloty. “Allen was an undersized defensive end who continually displayed how hard work can make you successful on the field. The increase ability to rush the passer was a big reason the defense was to have over 100 point improvement in scoring defense from a season ago.”

Linebackers:

MATT DELLINGER, Clarkston: A three-year starter in football and a four-year varsity veteran in basketball, Dellinger has committed to Kent State for football. His senior season saw him lead the Wolves in tackles and earn All-OAA Red Division honors.

“He’s one of the best athletes on the team. Matt was always making the play,” said Richardson. “He had a great season. I think Matt and Zach Collins were about a good of a linebackers duo we’ve had here in a long time.”

ZACH COLLINS, Clarkston: A rare four-year starter at a large school, Collins finished as the all-time leading tackler in school history. As a senior, he recorded 77 tackles and two sacks in 11 games, although he played the last three games with a cast on his hand. He was named to the Associated Press Division 1-2 All-State Team among his multiple postseason accolades this season. Central Michigan, Dayton, Butler, Grand Valley State and Penn are some of the many colleges actively pursuing his talents.

“Zach is our all-time leading tackler and one of the best I’ve ever coached,” said Richardson. He’s definitely one of the smartest players I’ve ever coached.”

KURT APOSTAL, Rochester: While Rochester suffered through a season of multiple injuries, Apostal was a consistent bright spot. The senior and three-year varsity veteran earned All-OAA Red Division and All-county Honorable Mention honors after leading the Falcons with 59 tackles and 13 tackles for loss in nine games. He has drawn interest from several Division II and Division III schools.

Kurt was our leading tackler and our best defensive player,” said coach Erik Vernon. “He was really consistent. I know if we didn’t have all the injuries this year we could have won another game or two. Kurt never let it get to him. He just kept working hard.”

SHANE FRAKES, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep: This senior three-year starter picked up All-CHSL honors after a fine season playing both linebacker and running back. He had 69 tackles on the defensive side of the ball to lead Notre Dame Prep to a perfect 9-0 regular season and berth in the Division 4 district finals. The 6-0, 200-pound power back also added 125 carries for 725 yards, a 6.1 average, and 10 touchdowns on the ground.

JON GALL, Lake Orion: Although a little undersized at 5-10 and 205 pounds, Gall made opposing players pay the price for coming into his neighborhood. The two-time All-OAA Red Division pick and three-year starter played through injuries in his career and was still amongst the Dragons’ top defensive players. He finished his senior season with 65 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries.

Secondary:

TONY ANNESE, Rochester Adams: Few athletes meant more to his team than Annese, a two-year starter after transferring over from Hartland. Annese, who committed last summer to Central Michigan University, played quarterback, wide receiver and safety for the Highlanders and will play in the secondary for CMU. This season at quarterback, he rushed 181 times for 1,535 yards, an 8.5 average, with 23 rushing touchdowns and four more passing touchdowns despite missing a game with an injury. In the secondary, he had 65 tackles and five interceptions. He earned All-OAA White Division, All-County First Team, All Metro North by both the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press and AP All-State First Team Division 1-2. He helped his 7-4 team reach the district finals.

“Tony is an explosive two-way player,” said coach Tony Patritto. “He had amazing production for only 10 games played.”

MATT ECONOMOU, Oxford: A fine baseball prospect in his own right, Economou displayed fine skills on the football field and bounced back from an injury-plagued junior school year to earn All-OAA White Division honors as both a safety and wide receiver in football. He had three interceptions this season, recorded 50 tackles, and was always a threat to catch the football when the run-oriented Wildcats opted to go to the air, leading the team in receptions.

“He had a great season. He was one of the top safeties in our league,” said Rowley. “He intercepted a few passes and came very close to intercepting a few more. He has great hands.”

JACOB ROMEO, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep: This two-way starter used his agile 6-0, 195-pound frame to have quite a senior campaign. Defensively, he recorded five interceptions and returned one for a touchdown, recorded one fumble recovery and had 18 tackles. On special teams he returned 10 punts for 175 yards and two touchdowns. He also collected 1,071 all-purpose yards with 12 total touchdowns playing cornerback, wide receiver, running back and punt returner.

At-Large:

LONNIE BOLDEN, Troy Athens: An All-OAA Red Division selection, Bolden was a standout two-way starter for the Red Hawks, who ended a seven-year postseason drought. Bolden played safety and running back for Athens. On offense he rushed 86 times for 604 yards, added 18 catches for 231 yards and had 11 total touchdowns. In the secondary or as a linebacker, he had 25 tackles and five sacks. Bolden also displayed some fine speed, returning a kickoff 70 yards inside the 20 yards line to set up a score.

“Lonnie is very powerful, explosive, elusive, and dangerous in the backfield. He is one of the premiere running backs in the OAA,” said Heppner. “Every time he touches the ball, great things happen. He is also a tremendous lock-down DB as well. Lonnie has developed himself into a true leader on and off the field.”

JARRETT BOCHNIAK, Troy: A three-year starter in the trenches as an offensive lineman and inside linebacker, Bochniak was a two-time All-OAA Red Division selection. He finished as the Colts’ leading tackler this season and carries a fine 3.7 GPA. He is a powerful lineman that is not easily shoved away from the play and is quick to hunt down running backs and quarterbacks to make the tackle.

Punter:

T.J. DEAN, Rochester: A two-time All-OAA Red Division punter, Dean had another fine season. A senior in his second varsity campaign, Dean finished with a punting average around 34 yards a game. Dean, who also plays wide receiver and runs track and field as a sprinter and long jumper, was also the team’s leading receiver.

“TJ was really consistent for us,” said Vernon. “He did a nice job punting and pinning teams back in their territory and was also a solid wide receiver.”

CO-COACH OF THE YEAR

KYLE ZIMMERMAN, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep: In his third season at Notre Dame Prep, Zimmerman helped resurrect the program and his team set multiple school records in that span, especially this season. After finishing the 2010 campaign with four straight wins, the Irish carried that over into 2011 and went 9-0 in the regular season and captured one playoff win, good for a 14-game win streak. The Irish, who were ranked as a high as sixth this season, were also CHSL AA Division regular season and CHSL Prep Bowl champions. Their season came to a 10-1 end with a loss to then-top-ranked Marine City in the Division 4 district finals. Zimmerman is 20-10 in three seasons at Notre Dame Prep with two playoff appearances (2009, 2011).

RYAN CULLOTY, Holly: Culloty had much success at Madison Heights Madison before coming to Holly in 2009. Since then, he has helped take this once doormat program to another level. The Bronchos qualified for the Division 2 postseason in back-to-back years for the first time in school history by making the cut in both 2010 and 2011.Even more noteworthy, Culloty’s team ended a 59-year hex by earning a share of the Flint Metro League crown, its first league championship since 1952. Holly also established multiple team and individual school records in the past three seasons. His team ventured from 2-7 in 2009, to 6-4 in 2010, to 7-3 in 2011, good for a 15-14 overall record in three seasons.

“We were fortunate enough to have a great class of kids come up through the program and they worked hard to get us to where we are now,” said Culloty. “It was a pleasure to coach this group. The challenge for us next season is to keep it going with a lot of new kids.”
