Detroit Community hands Clarkston first loss
CLARKSTON — Clarkston’s 9-0 start to the boys basketball season was built on stingy defense and a fine-tuned offense. The Wolves got a taste of their own medicine Tuesday night.
Detroit Community, ranked second in the state in Class B by the Detroit News, marched into Clarkston’s field house and shut down the Wolves’ offense that was averaging over 70 points a game with its own defensive schemes. The result was Community’s 46-37 non-league victory in a game betwen state powerhouse programs.
Clarkston, now 9-1, came into the contest ranked second in Class A by the Detroit News.
Romel Robinson scored 14 to pace Community. Bo Ziegler added 11 points and Jarell Martin twined nine points for the Hurricanes, who scored 18 points off three-pointers and finished 8-for-13 from the foul line.
Mitch Baenziger scored 15 and Matt Dellinger added eight points for the Wolves, who had just five players score points for the second straight game. Nick Tatu, Clarkston’s leading scorer who scored 25 in a win last Thursday over Pontiac, was held to just six points.
The Wolves only attempted six free throws in the contest, sinking five, and was held to a season-low four 3-pointers by Community’s defense.
Detroit Community (8-3) used a slow-down approach and led 1-6 after the first quarter. A 14-5 run gave the Hurricanes a 25-11 lead at the half, holding the Wolves to their lowest output in a half in years.
Clarkston outscored the Hurricanes 12-9 in the third stanza to trim the deficit down to 34-23, while the Wolves closed with a 14-12 edge in the fourth quarter, unable to make a serious threat into Community’s lead.
