FRIDAY’S BOYS BASKETBALL: Lutheran Northwest upsets Oakland Christian; Lake Orion drains Stoney Creek

ROCHESTER HILLS — Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest hasn’t had to many victories over Auburn Hills Oakland Christian in recent years. Nevertheless, the Crusaders picked up such a rare win Friday.

Northwest built a 17-10 lead after the first quarter and held on to record a 49-48 MIAC Blue Division victory over the defending conference champion Lancers, who suffered their third straight league defeat with the loss.

Nathan Drews fought his way for a game-high 14 points to lead Northwest. Gursher Rathor scored 10 and Josh Morrison twined eight points for the Crusaders (6-3, 3-2).

Josh Peterson and John Van Noord both scored 11 for Oakland Christian (5-3, 2-3).  Charles Hayden and Drew Perrin both chipped in with seven points for the Lancers, who made a disastrous 5-of-15 free throws.

Oakland Christian fought back with a 13-10 second quarter to trim the deficit down to 27-23 at the half. The Lancers outscored Northwest 13-10 in the third quarter, which brought them to within one point at 37-36 entering the final frame.

LAKE ORION 55, ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK 41: The Dragons pounded the ball inside to its big men, as 6-5 sophomore John McCarty scored 17 and 6-8 senior Brad Watterworth followed with eight points and 10 rebounds to lead the way to this OAA Blue Division victory.

Lake Orion (6-3, 1-1) broke open an 11-10 tight game with a 22-9 second quarter to build a 33-19 lead at the half. Both teams scored 22 points in the second half.

Devonte Kruse scored 10 for Lake Orion.

Stephan Makowski led Stoney Creek with 15 points. Saagar Sandhanwalia added 10 points and Ben Temrowski twined seven for the Cougars (0-10, 0-2).

TROY ATHENS 53, BIRMINGHAM SEAHOLM 38: Athens returned to the win column Friday with this OAA Blue Division victory over the Maples.

 

Marcarious Coakley scored 16 and Caleb McIntosh added 11 for Athens (8-2, 1-1), which closed with a 32-21 second half after leading 21-17 at the break.

Paris Bass scored 13 and Bret Houghton added 10 points for Seaholm (6-4, 1-1).

FERNDALE 83, TROY 74:
Ferndale remained in first place in the OAA White Division with this win over defending league co-champion Troy Friday.

Jordan Ellis tickled the net with 25 points for visiting Ferndale. Jacob Dotson scored 21, Robert Baiz had 15 points and Nate Stepney was the fourth Eagles starter in double figures with 14 points, who were 18-for-27 from the line to pull away.

Ferndale used the middle two quarter to pull away. After both teams traded off 20 points in the opening quarter, Ferndale outscored Troy 27-19 in the second frame for a 47-39 lead, then added a 19-16 run in the third stanza for a 66-55 advantage.

James Young surpassed 30 points for the third straight game, scoring a game-high 33 points for Troy (6-4, 1-1). Maceo Baston added 13 points and Joe Leonard added 10 points for the Colts.

BIRMINGHAM GROVES 64, OXFORD 53: Groves shut down Oxford’s Mark Hazelwood and Jacques Toussaint Friday and had enough to gain the OAA Blue Division victory.

Hazelwood scored six and Toussaint was held to eight points for visiting Oxford. Mike Kitchner scoffed 19 to lead the Wildcats (6-3, 1-1), who shot a dismal 11-for-24 from free lunch.

Kyle Erwin led three Falcons in double figures. Grant Henderson added 14 points and Emmanuel Thomas chipped in with 12 points for the Falcons (2-6, 1-1), who were still only 19-for-29 from the charity stripe in the win.

Groves led 13-8 after the first quarter and increased the lead to 29-19 at the half. The Falcons continued to pull away in the third quarter with a 16-11 run, good for a 45-30 lead through three quarters of play.

ROCHESTER ADAMS 67, AUBURN HILLS AVONDALE 44: Adams moved to 2-0 in the OAA White Division with another impressive league victory Friday.

Akhemji Williams and Zack Littleson both scored a game-high 20 points to pace the Highlanders. John Neidhart added nine points for Adams, who were a crisp 16-for-19 from the foul line.

Adams broke the game open by outscoring Avondale, 33-21, in the middle two quarters. The Highlanders closed with a 24-15 spurt.

Jabbar Mims led Avondale with 15 points and Erik Stubbs scored 10 for the Yellowjackets (3-6, 0-2).

ROCHESTER 65, FARMINGTON 50: Rochester won for the 10th straight time Friday, topping host Farmington in OAA Blue Division play.

Taylor Perry scored 21 and Paris Pereira added 20 points to lead Rochester, which converted 18-for-21 from the charity stripe.  The Falcons closed with a 22-8 fourth quarter after leading only 43-42 through three quarters of play.
Chris Hare scored 15 and Bryan Green added 12 points for Farmington.

NORTH FARMINGTON 62, PONTIAC 54: Dorrell Foster tickled the nets for a game-high 31 points in leading the Raiders to this OAA Red Division triumph Friday. Caleb Hoggans added 13 points for North Farmington.

The Raiders led 16-11 after the first quarter and 32-20 at the half. Pontiac outscored North Farmington 34-30 in the second half.

HOLLY 52, LINDEN 37: Austin Hopkin scored 12 and Nic Stoll added nine points to lead Holly to this Flint Metro League victory Friday.

Holly (8-1, 7-1) slowly built a 24-15 lead at the half and outscored the Eagles 32-22 in the second half.

Kevin Baker scored 13 and Ted Baker added 10 points for Linden.

ORTONVILLE BRANDON 73, LAPEER EAST 47: Brandon broke loose with this dominating effort Friday in Ortonville in Flint Metro League play.
The Blackhawks (4-7, 3-6) hounded the Eagles with a scorching 26-14 run in the first quarter and led 39-26 at the half. Brandon outscored Lapeer East 34-21 in the second half.

Cody Feltner led a balanced effort with 12 points for Brandon. Dylan Morris scored 11, Dylan Everett added 10 points, Alex Bageris chipped in with nine points and both Chuck Rise and Nick Keller scored eight apiece for the Blackhawks.

Arron Hirsch scored nine for Lapeer East (1-10, 1-7), which made only 10-of-28 free throws.

PONTIAC NOTRE DAME PREP 67, MADISON HEIGHTS BISHOP FOLEY 60: Kellen McCormick led three Fighting Irish in double figures during this CHSL road win.

McCormick scored 21 points to lead Notre Dame Prep, while Vinny Famularo scored 17 and Troy Sassack added 14 points for the Irish (6-3, 1-1).

NDP, which finished the night a crisp 16-for-17 from the foul line, canned six three-pointers in the game. The Irish led 34-31 at the half and broke the game open with a 16-8 surge in the third quarter.

Darius Glover scored 16 and Mike Oravetz and Max Aleshire added 12 points apiece for Bishop Foley, which made it a seven-point game with a 21-17 fourth quarter.

CLARKSTON 64, SOUTHFIELD 48: Clarkston bounced back from its first loss of the season Friday with this 16-point OAA Red Division win.

Jordan Dasuqi led four Wolves in double figures with 15 points. Nick Tatu and Mitch Baenziger both scored 11 and Matt Dellinger chipped in with 10 points for Clarkston (9-1, 4-0), which swished seven 3-points and made 7-of-9 free throws.

Clarkston raced out to a 21-9 lead by the end of the first quarter and outscored Southfield 34-26 during the middle two frames for a 55-35 lead entering the final stanza.

Jeff Greer scored 15 for Southfield.
