TROY — If Sunday’s Oakland County Boys Bowling Tournament was a March Madness bracket, then the bracket busters of the world would be going insane.

Several of the lower seeds advanced in match play before Waterford Mott escaped as the winner at the eight annual tournament at Thunderbird Lanes in Troy.

The Corsairs went on to defeat Oxford, 415-409, in the two-game finals. It was the first appearance for the finals for both teams and it came after Oxford qualified seventh and Mott ninth in the qualifying block, where each team had competitors bowl three regular games and three baker games.

“It was kind of funny. The lower teams won a lot of the matches in the match play,” noted Oxford coach J.R. Lafnear. “We weren’t in the top five and neither was Mott. But we both got hot at the right time and had a great battle in the finals.”

Lake Orion, ranked fourth in the state in Division 1, came out of the qualifying block ahead of the 30-school field. But the Dragons were like several other schools and fell by the way side.

Mott defeated Walled Lake Northern (412-394) in the Round of 16, defending champion Waterford Kettering (375-352) in the quarterfinals and Farmington-Harrison Unified (370-353) in the semifinals.

Oxford defeated Ferndale (377-351), South Lyon East (427-399) and Walled Lake Western (398-349) to reach the finals. The Wildcats did so with five non-seniors playing in the final three rounds.

“I was pleasantly surprised,” admitted Lafnear. “We have one senior, one junior and four sophomores and the senior didn’t play in the quarters on (to the finals). This bodes well for us because we are so young. We’ve hoping that we can carry this over to the rest of the season, build on this accomplishment.”

Lake Orion led the way out of the qualifying block with a 3,710 team score, where 16 teams advanced. South Lyon East (3,704), Novi Detroit Catholic Central (3,667), Walled Lake Central (3,636), White Lake Lakeland (3,614), South Lyon (3,611), Oxford (3,557), Walled Lake Northern (3,480), Waterford Mot (3,614) and Ferndale (3,500) rounded out the top 10.

In singles play, Hazel Park’s Charles Zelechowski was impressive in a field of over 150 bowlers, rolling up a three-game total of 725 to win by 12 points Ken O’Connor of Novi Detroit Catholic Central was second at 713. Zelechowski was 66 pins better than the 10t-place finisher.

Walled Lake Western’s Tyler Pajot claimed a distant third at 695, while South Lyon East’s Andrew Stanny (682), Lake Orion’s Josh Baryla (574), Oxford’s Sean McKinney (671), Catholic Central’s Eric Pavlov (671), Oxford’s Brandon Hurlburt (666), South Lyon’s Tyler Marcus (665) and Livonia Clarenceville’s Michael Uren (659) followed in the top 10.
