THURSDAY’S PREP ROUNDUP: Lake Orion soars past Rochester; Lathrup upsets state-ranked Clarkston
LAKE ORION — Lake Orion realizes that it must win out and get a little help from its friends to stay in the OAA White Division girls basketball race.
The Dragons did their part Tuesday. With only three weeks left in the league season, Lake Orion made sure it kept its hopes alive with a 41-34 victory over Rochester.
“We have those three league losses, so we know that we have to keep winning and get a little help. Somebody has to beat Adams a couple of more times because they have just the one league loss and that was against us,” said Lake Orion coach Steve Roberts. “We still have a chance, but so do a few other teams. But it all goes down to a couple of us beating Adams. Everyone else has at least two league losses.”
Birmingham Groves has three losses, while Farmington, Harrison and Oxford both have four losses. Rochester and Troy Athens are both out of the picture.
Against Rochester on Thursday, Marisa Secontine scored 16 with 15 rebounds to pace Lake Orion (10-4, 6-3). Hanah Hamay added 11 points and Laura Turnbull scored nine for the Dragons.
Anne Tucker scored 11 and Zhana Randolph added nine points for the Falcons (4-10, 3-6).
It was Lake Orion grabbing the 12-9 lead after the first quarter, with Rochester going on a 12-54 run for 21-17 lead at the half.
Lake Orion used a 15-0 run in the middle of the third quarter, where the Dragons held a 20-2 overall edge to break the game open.
Rochester closed with an 11-5 run but it was a case of a little too late for the Falcons.
