FRIDAY’S GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Holly cruises past rival Brandon

HOLLY — Behind a sterling defensive effort that held Ortonville Brandon to single digits in each of the four quarters, Holly cruised to a 37-22 girls basketball triumph over the visiting Blackhawks.

Sophomore Alyssa Copley, Holly’s 6-foot-1 sophomore center, continued to impress with a game-high 17 points to lead the Bronchos (12-3, 10-2). Lauren Maher and Brooke Hathun chipped in with five points each for Holly.

Holly built a 17-3 lead after the first quarter and never allowed Brandon to make a serious threat.

The Bronchos led 23-12 at the half and 31-18 through three quarters of play.

“We got everyone in tonight and got some kids some playing time,” said Holly coach Dave Hall.

“Our goal is to win the league championship and we’re still in it,” added Hall. “We didn’t play all that well tonight, but we’re god at analyzing (the film) at our next practice and fixing things.”

Holly trails Lapeer West in the standings by one game and one game ahead of Clio.

Amanda Harvard scored seven points for Brandon, while Emily Yeacker chipped in with five points for the Blackhawks.

“We are getting better,” admitted Brandon coach Andrew Taberian. “We have two freshmen and two sophomores that start and we play hard. We (Started the year) with very little varsity experience, so I think we have come a long ways.”
