WEDNESDAY’S PREP ROUNDUP: Rochester rolls by Notre Dame Prep; Irish seventh at CHSL Finals

ROCHESTER HILLS — Rochester surpassed last season’s win total by rolling past Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, 46-30, Wednesday night in a  non-league girls basketball game

Anne Tucker poured in a game-high 17 points to pace the Falcons (5-10). Zhana Randolph added 13 points, Lindsey Larivee scored eight and Aubrey Konal had seven points for Rochester.
Nicole Difiore scored 10 and Sarah Lewallen added eight points for the Fighting Irish (7-8).

Rochester led 12-10 after the first quarter and 20-18 at the half. In the third quarter, the Falcons held a 11-6 edge before putting the game out of reach with a 15-6 fourth period.
NOTRE DAME SEVENTH AT CHSL FINALS

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep took a step up the latter Saturday at the Catholic High School League wrestling championships, finishing seventh overall. The Fighting Irish were short-handed due to an illness that kept some of its wrestlers out of the lineup.

NDP was eighth last year.

 

James Yanik had an outstanding day finishing first with three pins, including one in a back and forth match in the finals against his rival David Obia of Detroit Jesuit. Last yearin the dual against Jesuit, Obia beat Yanik by an 8-4 count, although Yanik went on to upset Obia in the finals, 7-3, this time around.

 

Yanik joins Josh Romeo as the only two time Catholic League Champions from Notre Dame Prep.

 

John Potwardowski (103) upset the No.4 seeded wrestler with a pin late in the second period before losing to the No. 1 seed and eventual champion from Divine Child.  He finished fourth overall.

 

David Jankowski at 112 scored first in his first round match, but was out muscled and finished 0-2 on the day.  He was bumped up a weight and giving up 10-15 pounds each match. Sean Swieboda was filling in at 145, Chase Leske was wrestling at 152 and Michael Cowdin competed at 189.  All three went 0-2, but wrestled hard throughout the day. Michael Cowdin, lost a tough one in the consolation bracket, but managed to catch his opponent by surprise hitting a very awesome Japanese Whizzer.
