GIRLS BASKETBALL: Clarkston puts the clamps down on Stoney Creek

CLARKSTON — Behind a stingy defensive effort, Clarkston moved to one win from the OAA Red Division girls basketball championship with a 39-27 victory Thursday over visiting Rochester Stoney Creek.

Gabby Yurik scored 16 of her team’s 27 points for the Cougars (9-8, 7-6). Lauren Voss added seven points for Stoney Creek.

Megan Hastings scored 12 to lead a balanced effort for Clarkston. Erin Davenport added 11 points, Delaney Kenny scored nine and Anna Manilla chipped in with six points for the Wolves.

Clarkston (16-2, 10-2) led 10-5 after the first quarter and held Stoney Creek to single digits in three of the four quarters. The Wolves used a 15-7 run in the second quarter to go up 25-12 at the half.

The Cougars used a 10-7 surge in the third stanza t close to within 32-22 entering the fourth quarter, but Clarkston was able to seal the lid on any potential comeback bid. The Wolves outscored Stoney Creek 7-5 in the fourth period.
