ELMHURST, Ill. — The Oakland women’s basketball team (11-16) will be the No. 6 seed at the upcoming Summit League Championship hosted in Sioux Falls, S.D., the league office announced on Tuesday. The Golden Grizzlies will play No. 3 seed UMKC (20-10) on Sunday at the Sioux Falls Arena at 3:30 p.m. ET.

The Golden Grizzlies finished the regular season with a 7-11 league record and were in a three-way tie for sixth place in the league with IUPUI and Western Illinois.

To determine final seeding the league had to use several tiebreaking criteria, because all three teams posted records of 7-11 in league play and each split the season series against the other two teams. Additionally, Oakland and WIU finished identical records against league opponents, which meant that the seeding came down to the Ratings Percentage Index for both teams. The Golden Grizzlies came out on top with a final RPI of 230, compared with 251 for Western Illinois.

The Golden Grizzlies split with UMKC during the regular season. OU won an overtime thriller 71-65 at the Athletics Center O’rena in December, while UMKC won 63-54 when the teams met in Kansas City on Monday.

Two-time Summit League Tournament champions, Oakland last won the league title in 2006 as a No. 6 seed. The Golden Grizzlies are 17-9 all-time at the league championship and have advanced to the title game seven times.

Oakland will host a media day at the O’rena on Thursday from 11:30 – 12:30 a.m. for both the men’s and women’s teams before they depart for The Summit League Championships.
