MONDAY’S GIRLS BASKETBALL DISTRICT ROUNDUP: Notre Dame Prep rolls Lutheran North; Bishop Foley, Lakes win openers

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep opened up the Class B girls basketball tournament in fine fashion Monday night.

Holding a one-point lead t the half, the Fighting Irish pulled away in the second half for a 54-39 triumph over Macomb Lutheran North in a game played at Capac High School.

Notre Dame Prep trailed 9-8 after the first quarter, but used a 16-14 edge in the second period to go up 24-23 at the half. The Fighting Irish opened up the lead thanks to a 19-6 surge in the third period, good for a 43-29 advantage, then held a 11-10 edge in the final quarter to prevail.

Kiaya Bowman scored a game-high 21 points, going 14-0for-21 from the foul line, to pace NDP (11-10). Sarah Lewallen sank a trio of 3-pointers for nine points for the Irish.
Danielle Schomaker scored 12 and Katie Draeger added nine points for the Mustangs (11-10).


MADISON HEIGHTS BISHOP FOLEY 57, PONTIAC ACADEMY FOR EXCELLENCE 13: The Ventures controlled this game from start to finish in recording the district-opening win at Royal Oak Shrine Catholic.

Jackie Bieniewicz scored 15 and Megan VanFleteran added 14 points for Bishop Foley (16-5), which led 28-6 at the half.

Academy of Excellence (5-16) only made five field goals and didn’t have a player with more than three points.

WATERFORD OUR LADY OF THE LAKES 51. NEW HAVEN MERRITT ACADEMY 20: The Lakers opened up their title defense at home with this lopsided district win Monday.

Tori Duffey scored 11, Lexie Robak added 10 points and Carlee Cottrell chipped in with eight points for WOLL (17-3), whi ch had 10 players score points in the rout.

WOLL opened with a 19-0 run and led 29-4 at the half.

Micah McGlaun scored 10 for Merritt (6-8).
