SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—Oakland University’s stay in the Summit League women’s basketball tournament was a short one.

Bethany Watterowrth had 15 points and Victori Lipscomb added 14 for the sixth-seeded Oakland women’s basketball team  in a 72-59 loss to No. 3 seed UMKC  in the quarterfinals of The Summit League Championship on Sunday at the Sioux Falls Arena. Watterworth went over 1,500 points to close out her junior season.

“I am really proud of the fight that my team showed and continued to show all year long,” said OU head coach Beckie Francis. “This is a senior-laden UMKC team, that came out and showed they wanted to do something this year.”

Malika Glover added 10 points off the bench as Oakland chopped away at a deficit that reached 23 in the second half. The Golden Grizzlies shot 35 percent from the field and had three players finish in double-digits.

Oakland trailed by as many as nine points in the first half, but cut it to 30-26 at the half. Oakland (11-17) pulled to within two points on a basket by Lipscomb to start the second half, but UMKC (21-10) used a 24-6 run to take a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.

Lipscomb equaled her career-high in scoring and also led OU with six rebounds and four assists in the game. Watterworth played a season-low 25 minutes and battled foul trouble throughout the game.

Senior Sharise Calhoun scored eight points and had three assists in her final game. Oakland’s other senior Brittany Carnago added five points and two blocks to finish her career as OU’s all-time blocked shots leader with 276.

Kim Nezianya led UMKC with a double-double effort of 15 points and 14 rebounds. The Kangaroos won the battle of the boards 47-36, and shot 41.9 percent for the game with four players in double-figures.

It is only the third quarterfinal loss for Oakland in 13 years of Summit League Championship play.
