COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL: Rochester College cruises into national semifinals
UNIONTOWN, Pa. — Rochester College defended its No.1 seed in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament Wednesday afternoon.
The Warriors rolled to a 78-59 triumph over Maine-Fort Kent at Penn State-Fayette to advance to Friday’s national semifinals at 10 a.m. against fourth-seeded Ave Marie.
Dramell Hogan scored a game-high 30 points with nine rebounds to pace Rochester College (25-8), which has now won 15 of its last 16 ball games and is 13-1 since Jan.1 on the strength of a nine-game win streak.
Ricky Doran, RC’s 6-foot-8 senior center, added 18 points with six rebounds for the Warriors. Sean Mattia also reached double figures with 12 points and Torey Throop tossed in nine points for the Warriors.
The Bengals made a late push at the end of the first half, cutting the deficit to 32-28 with 2:55 left. Maine-Fort Kent could get no closer. RC closed the first half with a 9-0 spurt to go up 41-28 at the break and never looked back.
Rochester College shot an impressive 50 percent from the floor (28-for-56), made 15-of-18 free throws and sank 7-of-21 three-point attempts in the win over the eight-seeded Bengals.
The Warriors forced 17 turnovers, nabbed nine steals and only turned the ball over 11 times in the contest.
Othinel Hylinger led Maine-Fort Kent with 14 points and six rebounds, while Manny Odugbela added 12 points, 10 in the second half, for the Bengals.
