SWARTZ CREEK — Clarkston has heard the verbal abuse this season that its size, or lack thereof, will eventually cost the Wolves.

Clarkston has time and time again silenced its critics.

With one of its smallest teams height-wise since the mid-1990s, the Wolves used their superior guard play to thump Holly, a team with much more size, to the tune of a 73-19 victory Wednesday night in a Class A district semifinal at Swartz Creek.

Clarkston, which carries a top 10 ranking and 20-2 overall record into Friday’s 7 p.m. district final against 21-1 Fenton, blitzed Holly with an 18-2 run to start the game and never looked back in sapping the life out of the Bronchos.

Senior Mitch Baenziger scored 21 points to lead Clarkston. Junior Jordan Dasuqi added 13 points for the Wolves, who sank 10 three-pointers in the contest for 30 of their 73 points.

The 54-point win is the Wolves’ largest margin of victory in several years.

Clarkston outscored Holly 14-6 in the second quarter for a 32-8 lead at the half, then poured on 28 more points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach at 60-17 heading into the fourth quarter.

Nic Stoll, Holly’s 6-foot-6 senior center, scored six points to lead Holly (14-7). The Bronchos were held to only eight field goals and two free throws in the contest.

FENTON 69, ORTONVILLE BRANDON 44: Fenton continued its best season in school history with this lopsided win Wednesday in a Class A district semifinal at Swartz Creek.

The Tigers are 21-1 and advance to Friday’s district final at 7 p.m., also at Swartz Creek, against state-ranked Clarkston (20-2).
