Troy avenges Pontiac in district semis; Mott upends Athens

TROY — Behind a 22-17 lead to start the game, Troy was able to grab the early lead and cruised to a 66-57 triumph over Pontiac in a Class A district semifinal at Troy Athens.

Pontiac (formerly Pontiac Northern) had knocked the Colts out four times in less than a decade, including in a district semifinal last season.

Pontiac used a 12-11 edge in the second quarter to climb to within 33-29 at the half.

Troy (17-5), which won the OAA White Division title this season, used a 17-10 run in the third quarter to go up 50-39 entering the fourth quarter. Pontiac was able to hold a 18-16 edge in the fourth quarter, but the Phoenix could not gain enough momentum for a comeback.

James Young scored 24 to lead Troy.  Ben Horvath scored 12, Craig Duggan added 11 and Zak Noor chipped in with seven points for the Colts, who drained six triples in the game and were 26-for-33 from the foul line.
Pontiac (13-8) landed three players in double figures, with Jarod Jones scoring 15, Dijon Cogdell adding 14 points and Jemarea Samples draining a trio of three-pointers and adding 11 points for the Phoenix, who made only 4-of-10 free throws.

WATERFORD MOTT 42, TROY ATHENS 38: Mott came into the Athens gym and sprung the upset in this Class A district semifinal to earn a district final date Friday with Troy.

Khalil Malone drained a trio of 3-pointers and scored 15 points for the Corsairs (15-6). Brody Losh added nine points and Hunter Reiche added eight points for Mott.

Caleb McIntosh scored 12 and Marcarius Coakley added nine points for Athens (15-7).

Athens led 7-6 after the first quarter, only to see Mott go on a 14-8 run in the second quarter for a 20-15 lead at the half.

Athens fought back with a 12-9 surge in the third quarter to close to within 29-27 entering the fourth quarter. Mott staved off the Red Hawks with a 13-11 edge I the final frame.
