COLLEGE BASEBALL: Carson’s walk-off lifts Oakland past Canisius

DAYTON, Ohio – Spencer Marentette drove in Mike Carson with the game-winning run, as Oakland (3-11) beat Canisius (8-11),1-0 on Saturday at Woerner Field. Pitchers Hayden Fox and Greg Welke combined for10 strikeouts in the shutout win.

“Our pitchers did a great job for us today,” said Oakland coach John Musachio. “Canisius is a tough team and I am really glad that were able to battle them and come away with the victory.”

Carson reached on a two-base throwing error to lead off the ninth inning and scored from third on the single by Marentette to win the game. Marentette and Trent Dumheller each went 2-for-4, combining for all of the Oakland hits.

Fox turned in a dominant effort on the mound, throwing a no-hitter through the first 6.2 innings. He finished with nine strikeouts over seven shutout innings. Welke (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings to earn a win in relief for the second time this season.

Oakland preserved the shutout with a key defensive play in the ninth inning. With a runner already on first, Canisius hit a single to left field, but on the play OU caught the batter in a run down before throwing home to get the out at the plate.

In the eighth inning, Oakland nearly took the lead when, with runners at the corners, Drumheller hit a ball sharply up the middle, but the Canisius second baseman made a diving stop and putout Tim Ryan at second base to end the inning.

The two teams combined for seven hits and neither squad managed an extra-base hit. Garrett Cortright (2-3) suffered the loss going 8.1 innings and striking out seven.
